Can't drag the cursor up in text messages on new iphone 15 Pro iOS 17

I switched from my iphone 13 pro with iOS 17 (no problems with the upgrade) and now I've lost a bunch of features. This post is about typing a long enough text message so the beginning is hidden at the top. I can scroll to read the whole thing but I can't edit at the beginning. I push/hold on the message (or spacebar) and drag to the cursor to where I want it. I let go and it pops back down to a different part of the message. I don't need it often but it's something that Apple should be aware of if it's happening to others.

I just wrote a long text and nearly cried. When I scroll to a place to edit the whole thing suddenly flips to another place. Trying to control the cursor is useless. If I put the cursor somewhere it immediately pops back to the last place it was — or some totally random place. I could scream. The caps key goes off before I even have a chance to type. It’s basically doing the same thing as the cursor. Totally uncontrollable. And this back arrow editing thing is insane. Almost everything it suggests is not a real word so just trying not to touch it. I’m so regretting iOS 17.

I have the same problem on my iPhone XS since the update to iOS 17. This is not the only bug that I've come across but it is probably the most annoying. The only work around I've found is cut/pasting the message a paragraph at a time into Notes and then editing it and copy/pasting it back into Messages. Even though I know that I should just start in Notes, sometimes I don't plan on writing a long message, but I do. It would be nice if Apple were to fix this. Obviously, it doesn't seem like it would take much.

Exactly! It wastes lots of time trying to do a normal edit and almost always unsuccessful with the location of the “landing” or “touchdown” of the cursor! We shouldn’t have to dread attempting to make a change, even being forced to first write our texts using NOTES.

BTW I have always hated having only the one-way arrow. One more directional arrow has always been needed if Apple users will be honest.

I too had the highly annoying issue with the cursor, both with my iPhone 12 and two iPads. The phone updated to the 17.2 version automatically, as it is set to do, so at some point that cursor problem had gone away. However, I just discovered that for unknown reasons my iPads did NOT run the updates automatically, even though they are configured to do so (another software bug, perhaps?) After I ran the iPad updates the cursor problem seems to have disappeared from them as well. Thanks to everyone on this board for the input!
