MacBook Pro with macOS Sonoma crashes frequently and randomly.

Sonoma keeps crashing frequently and randomly. Never had any such issue with Ventura. Issues started after installing Sonoma on my Mac Book Pro (Apple M1 Max, 16 inch). Clearly a buggy OS, all apps up to date. Don't point at apps, please ...it's a Sonoma problem.

This is absolutely a Sonoma issue. Using MacBook Pro M1 max. No issues at all until installing Sonoma last week. I've talked to tech twice, shut down all background apps and start ups, shut down all apps, removed all USB devices and re-installed Sonoma. Even after all of that, if I leave the computer idle for an hour or two - it just shuts down.

The Panics logs (I've collected 11 so far) are all identical regards of apps on or off. This is the start of the log. You might check to see if there are similarities.

Hi,

When I closed the lid, sometimes it automatically rebooted with a startup sound.

I don't think Sonoma 14.3 will be better. I bet you will have the same issue.

Regarding the Activity Monitor, only the Energy tab crashes.

I can see others reporting the same.

The Touch Bar stopped working.

If there is no issue with the hardware, isn't it clearly the OS issue?

What did Apple suggest you? Did they say that you were just unlucky and have to buy a new one?

I disabled that option as soon as I updated the Sonoma (I don't like that feature, it's annoying if you have to screen share to a computer), and still get crashes. If it works for you, hopefully you're ok now, but overall, Sonoma is buggy garbage. My theory is that Apple has been taking away too many developers to get the Vision Pro out, and can't dedicate the resources to get a macOS stable enough to be usable for everyone. This on top of over a decade of rushed, yearly releases.

My MacBook Pro 2020 (Intel) crashes every night and at least one more time per day since it self-installed Sonoma (I didn't want to be upgraded to Sonoma). I tried someone else's advice to keep the screen from locking, but it still crashes and reboots every time it's idle. Then I have to reload all my web pages, projects, apps, log back into everything again, etc.... really time-wasting and frustrating. Thanks to the person who offered advice already, even though it doesn't work. Apple needs to fix this. My Intel Mac should NOT be running on Sonoma, and they should not have forced it on me. But since they did, they need to make the OS stable.

Came back from Apple store yesterday where they did a clean sheet install with firmware reset and assured me this would work...restored data from time machine last night, this morning crashed while the MBP sat at my desk as I was out walking the dog...

Did you make any attempt to let it run without reinstalling the crap you had on it?

The crash is still happening with Sonoma 14.4.1. This is so bad that I can't even use the laptop for more than 5 mins.

I have an Intel i9 2019 MacBook Pro.

Everything was running smoothly before this update.

I am at a point where I can't even seem to use the recovery or reinstall Sonoma. It just crashes on its own in the middle.

Plus, the MacBook is heating up like crazy. Apple is just not the company it used to be a couple of years back. They don't seem to be giving a **** about their customers at all.

I found this thread because my week-old M3 iMac crashes twice a day. Brand new computer, brand new software, latest versions. Poor Apple having to field these complaints, when it's our fault. I upgraded from a late 2012 iMac that was running Catalina, and it never crashes. You can't get new software for Catalina, so you spend $3k on the latest, and it's worse. Tell me again how none of this is Apple's fault.

You should return it. But, you say you had to replace the old one because of software. What software did you install?

Nothing but Better Touch Tool and very mainstream audio software--Dorico, Omnisphere, and Logic. Again, it's a week old. But I should return it? Like, they're not going to fix what everyone sees is a crashy OS? Then what computer am I getting to replace it?

If it is your apps, they aren’t going to fix that. I have an M2 MacBook Pro that doesn’t crash at all. Same for my M1 Mini. If yours is crashing, it is either defective or the software you installed.

My (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Intel, 2019) iMac's fans have been blowing hard since the Sonoma update. My 2017 (Intel) MacBook Pro started overheating and crashing regularly after one of the most recent Ventura updates and now I can't run half as many apps as the first Ventura updates.

My gut tells me this is a switchover to phase-out the old Intel chip computers and push the new operating system code that takes advantage of the new Apple chip computers -- but it seems the old Intel chips are running hot with the new code!
