MacBook Pro with macOS Sonoma crashes frequently and randomly.

Sonoma keeps crashing frequently and randomly. Never had any such issue with Ventura. Issues started after installing Sonoma on my Mac Book Pro (Apple M1 Max, 16 inch). Clearly a buggy OS, all apps up to date. Don't point at apps, please ...it's a Sonoma problem.

This is absolutely a Sonoma issue. Using MacBook Pro M1 max. No issues at all until installing Sonoma last week. I've talked to tech twice, shut down all background apps and start ups, shut down all apps, removed all USB devices and re-installed Sonoma. Even after all of that, if I leave the computer idle for an hour or two - it just shuts down.

The Panics logs (I've collected 11 so far) are all identical regards of apps on or off. This is the start of the log. You might check to see if there are similarities.

I think apple had made an serious issue releasing this update we have over 500 users with macbooks and over 70% of them has issues that system keeps crashing some of them have had it with office not installed from app store some with different causes

Besides Sonoma, what does that 70% have in common?

I run Sonoma on two very different Apple Silicon Macs and don't have any problems on either. I don't think I've seen any of the prolific posters here noting any problems, either. So, if it is purely a Sonoma problem, how is it we haven't seen the same issues? I can't imagine the odds favor none of us have the same problems on our many Macs.

The 14.2 update didn’t fully resolve all my issues. I haven’t had major system crashes since 14.0, but immediately after running the update, I logged in and had 2 crash reports waiting for me. Accessing external drives is still extremely slow, especially if it’s a drive with a lot of files, image files with previews, and/or custom icons.

Also, going to the Applications folder on my Mac mini lock up the Finder (it doesn’t happen on my Mac Studio).

Wow, I thought I was alone in this issue. I have a 2023 14in MacBook Pro, so it is pretty new. I thought it was a marvel of engineering with zero defects, until Sonoma update. Now it is crashing once a day. It is impossible to speak with apple support... "restart you computer...", "did you install any new software...", I can't go though those questions. We are not idiots, obviously as a developer we have done all due diligence before calling support. It is clearly an issue with the new OS rollout... I hope it is fixed soon.

I'm having similar issues with my 2018 MBP except from Touch Bar flickering.

Did you try to revive the T2 security chip? You will need another Mac with Sonoma for that.

One thing I noticed is that it does not crash frequently when I don't put it in power. I also removed the VPN software and some other outdated apps. These affected the frequency although it is still having same issues.

To make them ware of the extent of this, not exactly. Apple has become a behemoth. They do see forum posts, if they're large enough, but it's a game of numbers for them. It has to be a big enough problem for them to do anything about it. There may be other factors into why this isn't getting fixed as well.

To make them ware of your personal issue, and allow them to automatically collect data on the issue, posting here is a start. Calling Apple or going to an Apple Store is the next thing you can do. Submitting a bug report is really important as well: Feedback - macOS - Apple

I'm sure Apple is aware of the issue, but the questions we have to ask: Do they care? Are they too busy with other projects (Vision Pro, iOS, money making services, etc)? Are they of the mind set that they get away with waiting until the next major version of macOS to fix things? Do they think it's big enough problem compared to their overall customer base? I don't know the answers, but I have my suspicions.

I have the same problem. Recently, Sonoma self-installed itself on my 2020 Intel MacBook Pro. I did not initiate it nor want it, but somehow it happened. Now my MacBook crashes every night, and I have to reboot all my browser tabs, apps, re-log into everything again every morning. It's even started crashing when I walk away from the Mac for 20 minutes or more, and then I have to reload everything again, which really breaks my workflow.

I totally didn't want nor install this version of the macOS on my Intel Mac, but now that I'm stuck with it, I see that other people with newer Macs are struggling with this same issue. What's being done about it?

I have the same issue with Sonoma. I bought new MBP M3 Max in November, started crashing frequently, I reinstalled 14.2 multiple times. Got 14.2.1 and it seemed to solve it, no more crashes. Then 14.3 came out and I installed, seemed good, then 14.3.1 was installed and I crash multiple times a day. I tried to see if I could use Time Machine to go back to 14.2.1 but it won't let me...very frustrating that I spent so much on a laptop and it's so unstable.

Customers with Intel Macs should not have been able to install the Sonoma OS on their Macs. It happened to me by accident. I had no intention of upgrading to this system. My MacBook Pro, 2020, last-of-the-Intel chips laptop was running great. I don't know if it got pushed to my Mac with no effort on my part, or if I accidentally brushed the install button on the "You have updates" alert, but I didn't want this OS, and my MacBook Pro has been crashing almost every day since then. I could have lived without the AI autofill feature on my email, and various other things. This is a workhorse computer where I work on audio and video files, and this update has wreaked havoc on my productivity, constantly having to log back into all my resources and restart all my apps.

i have NOTHING unusual installed. So there is no need to blame it on something special you have going. It’s not your fault! It’s not hardware! It’s Sonoma!

i have not seen such core instability from a Mac os upgrade in many years. In the early days, we all expected serious bugs in .0 and would wait for others to find them and then an all clear to use a later release. But this is 2023! The kernel is supposed to be well protected!
