Since I updated my iPhone 13 Pro Max to iOs 17.0.2, Apple CarPlay reads out my WhatsApp messages on the iPhone (sitting in my briefcase, so not audible), rather than reading them out loud over the car stereo.
I can't seem to find any setting to alter it. Is it a bug?

In the Apple CarPlay section of the settings menu in my iPhone, I uninstalled the WhatsApp app (by sliding the selection button to ‘disabled’) and then re-installed the app by sliding it back to ‘enabled’.
When I tried using WhatsApp in my car after that, everything worked perfect; my messages were read out loud on my car-stereo again.

If this is only happening with WhatsApp, you can troubleshoot the app with the steps here that are geared towards an app that is not behaving as expected:
