Wired keyboard won't work after upgrade to Sonoma 14.0

I upgraded to Sonoma 14.0 last night and suddenly my wired Mac keyboard is not recognized. I tested the keyboard on another MacAir and it worked fine. I also have a remote mouse plugged into the keyboard and that works so it's not the USB port on my CalDigit adapter. I'm a two screen guy and hate typing on my laptop. Anyone else having this issue and have any fixes? I hate the thought of uninstalling Sonoma.

I was having the same issue with a wired USB keyboard no longer working under Sonoma. I would very briefly see a popup window when I plugged in the keyboard (through a USB-C converter). I found out that it was the popup window asking me if I should allow this USB device. But it was not staying up long enough for me to add the device.

The workaround was to

    1. Unplug the keyboard.
    2. Go to System Settings -> Privacy and Security. Under the security section change "Allow accessories to connect" to "Automatically when unlocked".
    3. Plug in the keyboard, verify it works
    4. (optional) Change the system setting back to "Ask for new accessories"

Hope this helps,

Todd

I have two keyboards on opposite sides of the room. Each is connected to my Mac Studio via the usb outputs. Funny thing is that one of the keyboards in the front of the room works while the one in the back does not.

they both are connected into powered docks. I sure hope apple fixes this soon.

anyone else experiencing this or have a fix other than a bluetooth keyboard?

The same happened to me with my Apple USB keyboard. I could no longer log on to my M2 Mac Mini because I was unable to type a password! This is really ridiculous, especially when reading comments that Apple will not fix this. Shame on them, great disappointment. I already had plenty of Wireless issues since I got the Mac Mini M2. Always the same: not Apple is to blame, but the connected accessory device, which still works fine on other non-Apple devices.

Well I wasn't willing to order an expensive €200 bluetooth keyboard from Apple for the workaround. Instead I found a €30 keyboard on Amazon that works just as fine. I can type and log on to my own Mac again! For me the Apple brand has sunk quite a bit since I bought this M2 mini and the lousy workaround solutions that they come up with.

I have a 2018 MBP that I was seeing this same issue with Ventura. I just upgraded to Sonoma today in hopes it would fix things. Oddly, the option to “Allow accessories to connect” didn’t show up in system settings in Ventura and still doesn’t in Sonoma. However, that setting does show up in my work M2-based MBP. I am having the same problem with wired USB Apple keyboard model A1243 on both MacBook Pros using either a Dell D6000 dock with the latest firmware or the Apple USB-C to USB Dadapter ( Model MJ1M2AM/A).

Thanks,

Ted

I might have gotten lucky. My Caps Lock key now does nothing. My computer is M3 iMac running system 14.4.1 with model A1048 Apple wired extended keyboard connected to Thunderbolt/USB4  using a USBA to Thunderbolt adapter, not Apple brand, just for this change.

Route was System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, Modifier Keys, Select keyboard, Apple Extended USB Keyboard, Caps Lock key, No Action.  Tested in Word and Caps Lock did nothing.

Moved keyboard cable back to a 10-port USBA hub, tested in Word. Still Caps Lock did nothing. Happy camper.

I did not try any other route such as keyboard connected to USBC or hub. Did not want to mess with success.

Update 2: I disconnected the Apple A1243 USB keyboard and tried connecting it again the following day and have been unsuccessful in getting it to be recognized again. So, a few hours after the Sonoma upgrade from Ventura it did start working until the next time I disconnected it and it has not worked since that time with the Apple USB-C to USB adapter.

I have found that putting a (Passport drive) supplied USB to USB-C adapter and then plugging it into the USB-C port on a Mac Mini works regarding keyboards that have a sock USB plug-in connection. We went through so many problems on another Mac Mini and I did a software work-around to get that to work but this is ridiculous. I know Apple did not like the Kensington KP400 boards but not letting a generic USB keyboard come on board is strange. Just go to Amazon and get a bunch of USB to USB-C adapters and live in peace for now.

I can understand your frustration. I am having endless problems with almost every aspect of Sonoma on my MacBook Pro M3. It came with Ventura installed but told me to upgrade to Sonoma. Wish I hadn't. From memory, this is not the first time in the 40 years I've been using Macs, that they have produced a dud OS upgrade, though I can't remember what the other one was, so it must have been a fair way back. Oh, and just for your information, I have for some years been using an Apple Wireless Keyboard, extended version (with number pad). It is Bluetooth, but Sonoma won't recognise it either. Have tried everything suggested on the internet, no dice. Fortunately it WILL recognise my short Apple bluetooth keyboard, but that is inferior in a number of ways.

My way to fix this error

I have this problem for 1 week since I updated my mac to "Sonoma 14.5".

On the password input screen, when I connect the keyboard, I still receive the connection and type in the password. After entering the password and then going to the main screen, the keyboard light still lights up but I can't type any keys!

Please turn on bluetooth and turn off bluetooth, then try connecting the keyboard again. Repeat the action if the keyboard is not working yet!
