iPhone 15 WiFi painfully slow.

Upgraded to an iPhone15 from an iPhone X (yes, really) and ever since the wifi connection is awful. Pages that loaded perfectly on the same WiFi with my iPhone X, will load very slow if at all. More often than not, I end up getting frustrated with the slowness that I just exit out of the app or site. It’s really bad and I’m not sure if this is a settings problem or if my WiFi chip might be defective??

I believe I've figured it out. If you have iCloud+, there is an option that I did add without realizing it when I first got the phone or updated it. It's not displayed as a VPN or in the VPN setting. That's why I think it's been so hard to figure out. It's under Settings > iCloud > iCloud+ > Private Relay > Off. Restart your phone after turning it off and my download speed went from 97mbps to 496mbps, as it should since I have a download speed of up to 1200mbps from my home service. I hope this helps. It has been driving me crazy since my 11-year-old computer was downloading so much faster compared to my new iPhone 15 Pro.

The problem is likely that VPN is on. And a second problem is, turning VPN off takes two steps (it likes to turn itself back on).

  1. Go to Settings --> General --> VPN & Device Management
  2. Click on VPN and then click on Lockdown Configurations
  3. Turn off connect on demand.

This will turn off VPN and ensure it won't try to start up again. I went through this with an Apple technician and it solved my internet speed problem.

Turning off Apple iCloud+ Private Relay worked for me. It didn’t cause performance issues on my old iPhone 12 mini, but has done since I upgraded to an iPhone 15. Could be a coincidence as there have been reported issues with Private Relay recently (it is Apples version of VPN).

To turn off - Settings > Apple ID page (select your name at the top) > ICloud > go down to iCloud+ section > Private Relay > toggle off

Or just search Private Relay in settings and Bobs your uncle.

Soon as I made that change my internet browsing is instantly back to normal.

Id rather pay for Nord VPN for encryption rather than have performance issues from iCloud+ Private Relay.

I was able to find a work around, but it’s a little disappointing that Apple couldn’t handle the load effectively.

For me, the work around was disabling the VPN option within Active Armor (ATT security app). Apparently, using Private Relay and a VPN was causing the slowness and/or timeouts in page loads. Disabling VPN seems to have resolved my page load problem, and I can still utilize Private Relay.

TBH, feels like a software problem that should be corrected in a later release. Why should someone need to turn off VPN just to get a decent page load time?

Interesting. I recently upgraded from an iPhone 12 to an iPhone 15 Pro Max.

I had this problem recently with my old iPhone 12, and just assumed that my old iPhone was nearing the end of its useful life (the battery was also not lasting as long as it used to), so a possible ageing hardware issue. I never got to the bottom of this, as I planned to upgrade, which I assumed would cause the slowness issue to disappear.

Not so: the new phone suffered from the same problem, so I came here for advice, and tried every suggestion - all to no avail.

Having exhausted every possibility, I took the problem to an Apple guru in the Genius Bar of my local Apple store. He had not seen this before, and tried all the (to him) obvious tricks to increase the speed without success, then he stripped everything off my phone and completely reinstalled the iOS - which worked properly straightaway. My phone is now operating at maximum possible speed, both on WiFi and data.

We still don’t know what the problem was, but the reinstallation of the OS certainly solved it so it is presumably software-related, especially as it also occurred on my old iPhone 12.

I had a similar issue when I got my new iPad which uses the same technology as the iPhone 15 Pro does. It may have something to do with WiFi 6E. You can try to turn off the WiFi 6E and see if this makes a difference for you. Goto Settings > WiFi and click on the blue “i” on the side of the WiFi that you are connected to. Once you’re in there you can find WiFi 6E and select it from automatic to off and see if this makes a difference for you. It made all the difference in the world on my iPad. That being said, it wasn’t the iPad itself, it was most likely a setting or something in my router that didn’t work well with the iPad but did with other devices as the WiFi 6E works fine with other routers. My router was included with my Xfinity Internet and just didn’t play nice. I have since moved and use a different provider and their router works fine with the WiFi 6E. I don’t know what it was with that router and other routers by them as well but when I left it works fine with the new one that I have with the different provider so I was never able to see what would happen when I got the iPhone 15 Pro Max because I was out of there by then, but I can tell you that I did see that with guests that had the iPhone 15 Pro when they would come over their phone would do the same thing and turning off this setting it worked fine.

I found a solution for iPhone 15 super slow wifi.

I think the iPhone's problem is preferring for some reason 2,4 GHz over 5 GHz from your home modem.

New modems have usually band steering mode. This means your appliances can choose wifi frequencies automatically from your home wifi network.

2,4 GHz has a longer range and slower speed and it is compatible with most electronics

5 GHz shorter range and higher speed and for newer electronics

If we create 2 separate wifi one for 2,4 GHz and the other for 5 GHz, and let the iPhone connect to only 5 GHz, speeds go instantly higher.

  • Find your home modem and connect to the admin page in your internet browser.
  • You will find the address and password at the bottom of your modem
  • The address is 192.168.x.x. In my case 192.168.0.1.
  • In the admin console under WiFi, enable networks 2,4 GHz and 5 GHz
  • Name them differently and apply changes
  • In iPhone wifi settings ignore the old wifi network, and connect only to a 5 GHz network and that is it.

Video how to do it!

Now that you bought yourself an iPhone 15 set it and forget it. The next steps of this troubleshooting will help you resolve any issues you have

First find out narrow down your information turn off your cellular data when you’re at home and just use your Wi-Fi. Don’t let iPhone determine what your best signal is. Turn it off. Use it for three minutes do a Speedtest if you find yourself at a very slow speed. It should be higher than your cellular data no comparison so if it’s slow you need to go into your Wi-Fi modem and in there you’ll find different channels. Mine was channel 8 I switched it to 11 hit speed test and I was 400 MBits per second. You need to find out what channel your modem communicates with your iPhone 15 the best there are a lot of reasons for this like interference etc. but we’re not gonna get into that here.

You probably know this next drill, but I’ll spell it out anyway turn off your Wi-Fi turn on your cellular wait two minutes go outside your house and do a speed test. If this proves to be a problem you need to call your cellular provider and if they won’t help you, you need a new cellular provider, unless you live in the woods and you inherently don’t have good coverage

adhering to the rules of the community. I cannot mention my cellular provider, but I called them and they kept telling me and making me feel like it was my problem. The phone I bought where I live it was all me then I went and got another cellular provider without canceling the first one just put the new Sim card in to the new provider, and I thought my iPhone would overheat it was going so fast, so I called my original provider and canceled. And now, if you’re gonna ask my provider, can you hear me now the answer is gonna be no cause I’m no longer with them

I had the same problem. After multiple calls to Cox it was revealed that my router (PW8, Brand: TECHNICOLOR

Model: CGM4981COM) defaulted to 2.4 GHz when I set up the network. I set up another network at 5.0 GHz. Problem solved. This is how I checked on my MacBook Air-Click on the WiFi icon in the top nav bar while holding down the Option/Alt key. 3. Look at the channel information written in grey text. It will say 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz.
