iMessage Sync Issues Post Sonoma 14.0 Update

I'm reaching out to address a technical issue I've encountered since updating to Sonoma 14.0, specifically related to iMessage functionality on the desktop.

iMessage Issue Description:

Post the Sonoma 14.0 update, I've observed a consistent problem with iMessage on my desktop. While messages are received on my iPhone or iPad, they are not syncing or appearing on my Mac. This has led to missed communications and a disjointed messaging experience.

Steps Taken:

  1. Ensured that all devices are logged into the same Apple ID.
  2. Checked iMessage settings on all devices to ensure they are correctly configured.
  3. Restarted all devices multiple times.
  4. Verified that the issue persists even when all devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  5. Tried accessing via multiple browsers.
  6. Cleared browser cache and tried private/incognito browsing modes.
  7. Reset my router to ensure it wasn't a connectivity issue.
  8. Used a VPN to see if the issue was location-specific.
  9. Logged out and restarted iMessage, then logged back in.
  10. Tried connecting to different Wi-Fi networks to rule out any specific network-related issues.

Engagement with Senior Advisors:

I've spent numerous hours liaising with Apple's senior advisors, hoping for a resolution. Despite the extensive troubleshooting and following all their recommended steps, the final suggestion was to run my device in safe mode and send in logs for further analysis. Regrettably, after providing the requested logs, I've yet to receive any feedback or resolution from Apple. This lack of follow-up, especially after investing so much time and effort, has been particularly disheartening.

Community Observations:

Upon researching, I've found that this isn't an isolated incident. Many users on Apple forums and community discussions have reported similar challenges with iMessage syncing post the Sonoma 14.0 update.

Beta Testers' Feedback:

What's more concerning is that some beta testers had highlighted these iMessage syncing issues during the testing phase of the Sonoma 14.0 update. This suggests a potential oversight in addressing known concerns before the public release.

I'm keen to understand if there are any known solutions or workarounds for this issue. Additionally, if there are any diagnostic steps or logs that I can provide to assist in resolving this, please let me know.

Thank you for your assistance and looking forward to a resolution.

Best regards,

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 14.0

*A Solution At Last!*

After a few weeks of nothing changing, even with the latest update to Sonoma, I was at my wits end. Even worse was that the synching issue had now hit my iCloud Drive and I was unable to access any of my files or anything within numbers and pages. Preview wouldn't work and then one by one my other programs such as Mail started to falter too. My iMac had become unusable. So I called Apple Support and spent from Friday to Sunday trying to get a solution. I even erased my HD and re installed Sonoma and a back up from my Time Machine and this still didn't solve the problem. However..........

I was finally put through to a senior Apple advisor. We created a new User Account on the iMac and transferred over all my important files and then added my Apple ID iCloud account and everything started to reappear and work correctly. iMessages appeared in Sync with my iOS devices and I could access iCloud Drive! There appeared to have been some kind of corruption within my original user account and it was only getting worse. Creating a new user account has completely changed everything back to a new working efficient iMac, in Sync with my iPad and iPhone. Just also to confirm that all those entries that have said just open up iCloud settings and hit the sync button etc etc that didn't work or show up for me, now do so and I can hit the SYNC button and it Sync almost straight away. SO..........

I would suggest you create a new USER profile and open yourself up in that and add your Apple ID / iCloud account to it, as you would your original user profile and test it and see that everything loads up and starts synching. If it does then copy across your important files and folders in Finder from your old user profile to the new one. Once you have completed all this just check again all is working fine. I was then advised to not delete the old user profile for a couple of weeks until I was happy I had everything I needed from the old profile before deleting it and getting rid of what ever was causing the corruption. We still didn't get to the bottom of what has caused all this in the first case but I now have a working, efficient and fast iMac, back fit for purpose. I hope this helps all those who like me, were starting to doubt my own sanity! Good luck !!

(PS you can't add a new user profile account with the same name as your original one, so you have to make sure it is different even if it is one letter or number different).

Upgraded to 14.1.2 yesterday and imessage no longer sends attachments.

All my other apple devices work fine so it definitely points to sonoma being the culprit.

Have signed in and out of icloud, rebooted, re-synced, etc.

I was hoping the same imessage improvements found in the latest ios would also be available in the mac os imessaging but seems the opposite is true.

I am having exactly the same problem for a few months now ever since the Sonoma 14.1 update. I have tried every single workaround that has been mentioned over and over again and nothing has changed. I was hoping the update of 14.3.1 would fix this but it hasn't.

C'mon Apple this is the fundamental reason you push buying multiple devices so that every product syncs......but it doesn't!

Please fix asap!!

Just to add one more Apple Eco user to the mix with the exact same iMessage sync issues and attempted the same fixes with no change. Additional issue is that numerous incoming email messages from Apple Mail (me.com and cloud.com) to to the 'junk' folder....had nearly zero before. Also spent at least 20 hours with Apple tech, at the store, senior advisors and sent in numerous 'logs'.....received one call back from one senior in over a four month period with no fix in sight and still no fix in sight. I've been with Apple since about 2002, even worked part time at an Apple Store. Seems both the attention to detail and the followup are, sadly, going down hill. Maybe too much attention on the 'really' new stuff, Apple TV+ and who knows what 'advanced' projects as the bread and butter devices, software, upgrades etc are taking a really back burner for attention. This issue of iMessages is ALL OVER the net with the same lame answer to 'check you sync'...clearly many inputs are not ever read or misread. Really sad!!

I have scoured the internet and these forums for a resolution to my problem of my iMac not syncing Messages with my iPhone and iPad without success. I have tried every conceivable suggestion so far and have given up. My iPhone and iPad happily sync together no problem, it's just the iMac that doesn't want to play after I uploaded the latest Sonoma update. Im going for a lie down and will wait for 17.4 and pray and hope that sorts out the issue.

For what it's worth my iPad and iPhone show I have approx 1700 messages in iCloud but my iMac as above shows ZERO. Nothing happens when I hit the "Sync Now" button. Not a shimmer or a shrink or expand and nothing else changes. Still shows 0 messages in iCloud, so it seems to me the Messages app on my iMac isn't speaking with my iCloud at all.

I have the same or similar issue. On my Mac (Sonoma 14.4) I regularly have to manually sync iMessage to get rid of phantom badge notifications. Even with all messages read on all Apple devices, my Mac shows I have new unread messages (usually one). I've tried all the regular tricks including signing out of iCloud on my Mac and iPhone. It just keep happening and I'm fairly certain it began with the upgrade to Sonoma last year.

Non-arriving messages have nothing todo with iCloud sync, because they should appear on all devices anyway. iCloud sync for messages is only for backup and to have deleted messages removed from all devices (and for the government to be able to read them). Furthermore, iMessages aren't SMS, so most answers in this thread, including the so called "best reply" are off topic. In my case messages sporadically don't arrive on my Sonoma machine, especially after the device was offline for a short time. This isn't a problem with the other devices, even though iCloud sync is disabled on all of them, and I'm talking about real iMessages, not SMS. So thanks for nothing.
