iBooks update - automatic highlighting not working on iPhone?!

I used to be able to drag my finger across text in iBooks and it would be automatically be highlighted. Now with the new updates it just selects the text and I have to select from a drop down menu that I want to highlight it in a color. It's so annoying, especially when reading one handed on the go. Is there a work around for this? I feel like apple doesn't even care about the books app. It's always been glitchy and now this nuisance on top of everything -_-. Please help!*cries*
