After upgrade to Sonoma Touch ID stopped working to unlock by single touch

After upgrading to Sonoma, the fingerprint button (or the power button) stopped unlocking after it has been touched. Any other key should be pressed along to get the system unlocked. Only with a second key pressed before or after the fingerprint button touched the system accepts Touch ID instead of typing a password.

I am having the same problem, touchID does not work anymore. I deleted my fingerprints and now I cannot re-enrolled them. I have clean the fingerprint and fingers but nothing works. my MacBook Air M1 is like new!

Everything used to work until I upgrade to Sonoma.

I had a chat with Apple support, and they asked me to run diagnostics. When I tried that, I got "There may be an issue with the Touch ID sensor" with the codes BMT003, BMT004, and BMT005. It seems like I have a hardware issue.

Can anyone who is having the same Touch ID issue try the diagnostics and share your results?

The issue is that logging in after inactivity isn't working after just touching the fingerprint key. Another key had to be pressed for showing up the regular password prompt window. Then the system unlocks with touching the fingerprint key (no password entry is needed).

I think I got that message on the first page. That's why I suggest to all the "Me Too's" with a different problem they look somewhere else for the solution to their problem.

I can't replicate your problem on a M2 MacBook Pro.

I'm not sure what happens on my M1 Mini with Magic TouchID keyboard. I've got to turn on the TV with a remote, then I likely just hit the keyboard to wake the Mac. I get problems on that entering a password after sleeping overnight. I have to plug in the cable.

I am having the same issue, I have a 2020 Macbbok Pro M1, 8GB running Sonoma 14.0

The touch ID function works once logged in and opens passwords and websites but if I log out of my user account and try to log back in or after a restart trying to use the touch it says " Your password is required to enable TouchID" but it IS enabled and working normally once logged in.

Any ideas?

Please fix.

Normal. It happens after a certain amount of time of being logged out or something. I don’t have a firm grass on the timing. You must periodically login with a password to reenable touch ID.

Sorry to correct you but it happens every time. Either after just logging out or after restarting. It's the same thing, and I had a second Mac come in later in the day with the same issue but it was running Ventura.

Does it happen if you don't log out and just go to the Lock Screen?

I never log out and only have to enter a password after a few days of using Touch ID to unlock.

I was having this problem ( al ot of others are too)

I have a macair with M2 chip. I shut it down "forcefully" I guess its called? And when it turned back on suddenly the Touch ID problem I had was solved and the spotlight issue.

I don't know if this might help anyone else. It can't hurt to try

Here is a link of how to do this

I noticed the Touch ID stopped working this afternoon. I am on MacBook Air M1 2020 with Sonoma 14.0.

I got an extra power adapter so I could work with the laptop somewhere else without moving the original charger.

I unplugged the laptop and the Touch ID started working again. I plugged the power cable and it stopped working.

I unplugged it and the Touch ID works without issues.

Just in case this might be of help to anyone.

Update - both my Mac mini and Air are still misbehaving - today I've deleted all the fingerprints and started again. They work for a short while then they just randomly stop working. Really annoying, might have to rebuild both machines to an earlier reliable version. Also noticed bluetooth connection to my Apple Keyboard, trackpad and mouse can be really slow - linked somehow?
