Sonoma 14 Mac book constant fan and overheating

I updated my MacBook to Sonoma 14 a few days ago. Since that time the fan runs constantly even when nothing is open. The battery obviously dies much faster. In the activity monitor it says CMFSyncagent is 92.3% and remains at the top of the list far exceeding any other activity. I did the whole shut down, hold option/shift etc for 7 seconds thing. Once restarted this stops the fan for about 5 minutes. I don't have many downloads on my Mac. I have a ton of storage. I am blaming this on the update and not sure how to correct it.

CMFSyncAgent "Communications Filter Synchronization Agent" is a macOS System File.

If shutting down and restarting does not resolve your issue

A SafeBoot Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies.

Log in and test, reboot as normal and compare your results.

So, I have an update. I decided to go back Ventura as it was reported to have solved the problem. I was going to use my last back up with Ventura. I had to use Migration tool but inadvertently just migrated my latest back up (same day) under Sonoma and only migrated Apps and System - not my files. When I restarted my MBP was running much cooler. Idles around 50 to 60C now. I had to use Disk Utility to fine my partitioned drive with my files but it seems to have solved the problem. I don't how but it did work. So, rewriting the file seems to have fixed the problem for me. I also let the laptop sit overnight on battery and it was no longer draining. Now, when running Chrome, mail, Zoom and a few other programs it runs around 68 to 73C. I did install SMCfan and set it on high RPM, I run a cooling pad and run an outside fan on the back too, which all appears to be helping keep it in the 60's. Still warm but not the 80's or 90's C I was getting.

Hey guys, try using the software CPUSetter to limit the % of CPU used by the processes that are using too much CPU processing power. In my case, I limited the processes "sharingd", "contactsd" and "CMFSyncAgent" to allow each of them to use only 10% of CPU (see screenshot), it resolved my issue, but you can also check which processes are consuming more CPU in your case in Activity Monitor. I have also downgraded to Macos Ventura and it looks like it helped a lot.

If all of these problems were caused by ONE underlying issue, it would already be known and fixed.

If any of the over 200 Posters who posted or clicked the "Me Too" button are actually serious about fixing the issues they are experiencing, you need to start a NEW discussion. This discussion has so many different computers and MacOS and slightly different issues, Readers can not possibly keep things straight to actually solve anything.

Be sure to create a title that will attract readers who can help, and include:

model year and screen size of your MacBook Pro.

Exact version of MacOS.

exactly what symptoms, and when they occur.

and an Etrecheck report:

Download and run this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck, developed by a software developer for use on the forums. It changes NOTHING.

Etrecheck contains little tests for speeds of devices, CPU utilization, memory usage, energy usage and a digest of recent problems, in one easy to use package. It does not even need to be Installed.

if you follow the directions faithfully, its report (pre-laundered of all personally-identifiable information) can be "Shared" to the system ClipBoard, then Pasted into an Additional text window in a reply on the forums.

This happened to me as well, what I did was downgrade back to Catalina10.5 and then back to Ventura 13. And it fixed the heating and fan problem. NOTE: this will reset your Mac. so make sure it is backed up.

  1. Shut down mac
  2. Press the Power button and immediately press and hold Option-Shift-Command-R.
  3. Put in wifi and wait until utilties screen
  4. Select the Reinstall macOS option
  5. And then just follow the steps.

now your mac will be on Catalina 10.5. and then go to How to download and install macOS - Apple Support and download Ventura 13 under "use the app store"

Mac Overheating Issue - Sonoma

My MacBook details:

MacBook Pro

13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports

Processor 2.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

Graphics Intel Iris Plus Graphics 655 1536 MB

Memory 16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

macOS Sonoma 14.2.1

My Mac seems to have been overheating recently - running the battery down massively while in sleep mode, and being baking hot when both open, idling and in sleep.

Fans constantly blowing.

I found this thread on the issue and did many of the steps suggested by contributors.

This issue 'seems' now resolved. It still runs hot when doing tasks, but it always has (I'm not a fan of the touchpad as I'm sure that drains battery and uses needless power), but when idling and sleeping it cools down, and the fans don't fire up all the time as they were.

I used CleanMyMac to get rid of some login / start up items, and also did a clear out of junk and unused apps - still seemed to be happening.

I used Settings > General > Login Items to remove more, including Google LCC, and CleanMyMac's thing, Setapp from starting up

WorkSpaces I removed (haven't used it in ages)

Mosaic too

"Reset the SMC" by pressing Shift + Ctrl + Option + Power when device was off.

Things were still running hot so...

I also removed the following from login items and quit them:

DefaultFolderX

Flux

Can't remember what else but at least one other thing

MS updates and licence thing

I turned off the screen saver (I've never seen it anyway as I have my screen go off when it would run it) and changed wallpaper image to a downloaded static photo backdrop.

Which of these have caused the issue to be fixed... I don't know.

But it does seem to be better now.

Several people here seem to think the Wallpaper was causing them issues, so it may have been just that last one, or several things combined.

downgrade takes all afternoon. MacOS will never install older version unless all traces fo newer version are GONE.

You have to make a full backup (which you should have already) ERASE your disk, install MacOS. and then restore your files from backup.

Instead of doing that, Consider downloading and running this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck. it changes NOTHING.

Immediately after an upgrade and for at least the next several hours of 'awake but not excessively busy' time, your Mac will be rebuilding the Spotlight index. This index of every word in every document is used to provide fast searches and also a quick reference of what files have recently changed, used to make Time machine run MUCH faster than otherwise possible.

After Spotlight search becomes available (indicating indexing is done) and your next Time Machine backup has completed, things should calm down.

I had this same problem and tried a few things, but what finally worked was resetting the SMC. Power off computer. With computer plugged into a power souce, push 'shift, control, option' and power button down at the same time and then release at the same time. Press power button again to turn computer back on. Worked!!

Using 2019 MB Air. Upgraded to Sonoma 14 when it came out. Have had the constant fan issues through the Sonoma versions. Upgraded to Sonoma 14.3 yesterday, disabled all Open at Login apps, reset SMC (Shutdown MBA; hold Crtl-Shft-Opt-Pwr for 10 seconds; restart). 12 hours later and still no fan issue. Had to re-allow MS AutoUpdate in Open at Login. Otherwise, all is working well.
