Sonoma 14 Mac book constant fan and overheating

I updated my MacBook to Sonoma 14 a few days ago. Since that time the fan runs constantly even when nothing is open. The battery obviously dies much faster. In the activity monitor it says CMFSyncagent is 92.3% and remains at the top of the list far exceeding any other activity. I did the whole shut down, hold option/shift etc for 7 seconds thing. Once restarted this stops the fan for about 5 minutes. I don't have many downloads on my Mac. I have a ton of storage. I am blaming this on the update and not sure how to correct it.

Why Apple doesn't test this software on current systems beforehand is unreal. My Mac is so hot, it will burn your skin. I can't imagine how much life I'm losing from my Mac due to the heat this update is causing. If I was conspiracy theorist, I'd bet that is their goal.....sell more computers. They could easily fix this but they don't. I dare Apple to provide a reasonable answer.

Hey guys, try using the software CPUSetter to limit the % of CPU used by the processes that are using too much CPU processing power. In my case, I limited the processes "sharingd", "contactsd" and "CMFSyncAgent" to allow each of them to use only 10% of CPU (see screenshot), it resolved my issue, but you can also check which processes are consuming more CPU in your case in Activity Monitor. I have also downgraded to Macos Ventura and it looks like it helped a lot.

I tried to work in safe mode but it wasn't productive option for what I needed to do. I did the Option Shift R option and when I went to select the hard drive to downgrade there was no hard drive to select! So I am now going to have to take my MacBook in for service. I was going to do it this past weekend but the store said they would need to hold it for 48hrs. Calling Apple they said there is a beta update for Sonoma but not avail yet. They didn't know when it would be avail. This issue seems to be a problem for a lot of people based on the response from Apple Store. If you are able to downgrade to a previous IOS that's the solution. Make sure your computer is backed up. My fan is going CRAZY right now.

So, I have an update. I decided to go back Ventura as it was reported to have solved the problem. I was going to use my last back up with Ventura. I had to use Migration tool but inadvertently just migrated my latest back up (same day) under Sonoma and only migrated Apps and System - not my files. When I restarted my MBP was running much cooler. Idles around 50 to 60C now. I had to use Disk Utility to fine my partitioned drive with my files but it seems to have solved the problem. I don't how but it did work. So, rewriting the file seems to have fixed the problem for me. I also let the laptop sit overnight on battery and it was no longer draining. Now, when running Chrome, mail, Zoom and a few other programs it runs around 68 to 73C. I did install SMCfan and set it on high RPM, I run a cooling pad and run an outside fan on the back too, which all appears to be helping keep it in the 60's. Still warm but not the 80's or 90's C I was getting.

I had the same issue with my 2019 MBP. I decided to go back Ventura as it was reported to have solved the problem. I was going to use my last back up with Ventura. Idling at 50°C is not cool enough at all. Mine is a 2018 15" MBP and the battery temperature while running Safari (5 tabs), Skype and Finder is 26.4°C.

You must be having some 3rd party apps running in the background. Check in System Settings > Login Items > disable and delete them. It could also be that the air vents are clogged, or the fans are dusty that they won't pull in enough cool air in.

One more update: I recommend turning Power Nap off completely for battery and power cord. I did this and my MBP is running about 5 to 10 degrees C cooler overall. It will jump when opening apps, doing more intense work but it cools pretty fast. I've got 6 applications open right now and i'm at around 52 C.

Computer might heat up depending on the apps you use, so what are those 6 applications?

A top of the line MBP from even 5 years ago is still plenty of power and should last another 5 years minimum. There’s no need for an upgrade.

This I agree. Mine is nearly 5 years old and doing pretty well. Not heating up, battery as good as it was new, etc. But, most of the problems the device owners usually get are due to their way of usage. How many users ever read the user manual, by the way? When we get a new dishwasher, we read the instructions, don't we? It has too many buttons and options than the last one.

I had this same problem and tried a few things, but what finally worked was resetting the SMC. Power off computer. With computer plugged into a power souce, push 'shift, control, option' and power button down at the same time and then release at the same time. Press power button again to turn computer back on. Worked!!

Using 2019 MB Air. Upgraded to Sonoma 14 when it came out. Have had the constant fan issues through the Sonoma versions. Upgraded to Sonoma 14.3 yesterday, disabled all Open at Login apps, reset SMC (Shutdown MBA; hold Crtl-Shft-Opt-Pwr for 10 seconds; restart). 12 hours later and still no fan issue. Had to re-allow MS AutoUpdate in Open at Login. Otherwise, all is working well.
