If the update is stuck on "preparing", one can't delete the update file. It shows "Download and install" and if you touch it, it foregoes download and remains still stuck on preparing. There is no way to delete bad update file.

Maybe resetting watch and setting it up as new would help as there's no other way around this problem? Or resetting the watch, then removing Watch app from iPhone, then downloading Watch app again and then setting watch up?

Anyways, this "preparing" bug is annoying and everybody who tells "delete update file" is selling snake oil as there's no way to delete update file from Watch app.

Update: What helped me was shutting both off and then switching on watch BEFORE iPhone. Then "preparing" indicator started moving and now update functions. What do you know :D

Hi Tom-54,

We see you checked out the related article titled Update your Apple Watch and want to know how you can delete the watchOS update so you can re-download it. The text below is from the resource you viewed and it should walk you through it:

"Need more help with updating?

Try these steps:

  1. Make sure that your Apple Watch is connecting properly to its charger
  2. Restart your Apple Watch.
  3. Restart your paired iPhone.
  4. Try again to update your Apple Watch.

If the update won't start:

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap General > Software Update.
  3. Delete the update file.
  4. Try again to update your Apple Watch.

Learn what to do if you see 'Cannot Install Update' when updating Apple Watch or if your Apple Watch says you need more available storage to install a watchOS update."

Best wishes.
