Highlighting in PDF on Monterey 12.6

When highlighting text in Nature Journal articles downloaded as a PDF, highlighting can sometimes cause whole pages or even paragraphs to be highlighted in the adjacent column. This doesn't happen in High Sierra or 12.3, but only 12.5, 12.6. Please fix this issue. To be more specific, when I am highlighting a sentence in one column, it will also highlight another column next to it. Again does not happen in High Sierra. It seems not to happen in Ventura as well but I am not upgrading yet.
