Message has unrelated name instead of sender's on heading

When I open my messages, on my 3rd gen SE phone, I usually see the name of the sender, 2 lines of the text and the time sent. This morning I received a message from a government dept with an unrelated name from my contacts as the sender. I checked the email and it was legitimate and I have never texted with the person whose name appears. How does this happen?

iPhone SE, iOS 16

Hello ginasdad,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities.

The only way a contact name can pop up, is if it was inadvertently saved in a contact card. This is a common issue, sometimes multiple names or numbers in contacts can produce the "Maybe" tag when the info pops up.

Check and edit your contacts, see what info is saved there.

Thanks.
