turn off profile photo sharing

When I call people on my iPhone they say they get a full-frame photo of me. How do I turn this off?

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 12

To stop automatically sharing your name and photo with contacts you call or message, open Settings > Messages > Share Name and Photo > turn off “Name & Photo Sharing” or set “Share Automatically” to “Always Ask”.

I'm seeing that in IOS17, you an go to contacts and turn off name and photo sharing. So I'll try that once I'm updated.

I did that in messages, but my friend says he still sees my photo pop up on his phone when I call.
