email images not loading in mail.app from mailing list, display in gmail app

I receive an email from a mailing list to a gmail address.

The email in mail.app is not displaying the images. The email viewed in the gmail app or gmail web interface shows the image.

It's not the prefs.

Here's the email in Apple mail.app, note the missing header image. But also note the image in the footer is displaying.

This started happening this summer. I'm currently on Sonoma OS. Happens on both iMac M2, and MacBook Air M1.

Same thing happens with other addresses, but the images do show on iPhone 14 (latest iOS)

Anecdotally other users of the same mailing list have reported the same problem.
