AirPods Max say connected in Settings/bluetooth, but audio comes out of iphone

AirPods Max Headset connects, but audio comes out of the iPhone ....

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.  


For troubleshooting, first try to reset your AirPods before pairing them again: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro


If the issue continues, please complete each troubleshooting step in this last article: If your AirPods won't connect


You may also need to adjust the audio output settings for your iPhone as explained here: Adjust audio settings on iPhone.
