AirPods Max say connected in Settings/bluetooth, but audio comes out of iphone

For troubleshooting, first try to reset your AirPods before pairing them again: How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro.
If the issue continues, please complete each troubleshooting step in this last article: If your AirPods won't connect.
You may also need to adjust the audio output settings for your iPhone as explained here: Adjust audio settings on iPhone.
