spacebar cursor movement not working

Previously, if I wanted to move the cursor on my iphone to a specific place, i could long press the spacebar and move it. Since the ios 17 update i have found that this only works until you get to the edge of the viewable area. For example, if i have a long text message and try to fix a word at the beginning by long pressing and moving the cursor, the it moves to the top of the viewable area and stops- the text message does not “push through” and scroll to the top of the message. Getting to the top of the message by clicking also does not work, rather the cursor gets placed in some random spot in the paragraph.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is there a fix or workaround?
