Number changed to primary
On my girlfriend’s thread with me, between texts, it says “number switched to primary”. What does this mean?

That is the notification to you from your iPhone. You appear to have two active phone lines. Looks like you begin the messaging from the secondary line and then it lost signal and the primary line picked up the conversation. This is why you received that notification.
