How to set up my phone in order the get imessages when I travel with a virtual esim?

I am using a vitual esim while I travel and the company suggested me to turn off the primary esim (my home carrier) and set up to receive imessages and face time with my email address. This will not trigger any charges from my carrier for any SMS/MMS. However, some reminders of appointments or reservations are being setup via the phone number. I believe if I keep my primary line on for voice and messages and then data with the virtual esim, I will not get charged when I receive sms (correct me if I am wrong). If I have to send imessages, I would not be charged either because imessages are being sent via wifi or data. Please advise. Thank you

Hello wenyoga,

You might have some options regarding call forwarding from one number to another, listed at Set up call forwarding and call waiting on iPhone - Apple Support. However, this does not apply to texts. In order to receive those sent to your primary number, you'll have to keep it enabled. Costs would be determined by your cellular carrier, so we'd recommend speaking with them regarding any costs when using your primary number and phone out of your normal area.

Safe travels!
