I can't delete a contact in a group

"If you can't add or remove someone in a group message

• You can only remove someone if the group has four or more people, and everyone is using an Apple device, like an iPhone or iPad.
• You can only add someone to a group message if they're using an Apple device. If you want to add someone to a group message but they're using a non-Apple device, you need to create a new group message. That message will use SMS/MMS by default since someone is using a non-Apple device.
• You can only add someone to a group message that already includes three or more people. You can't add someone to a messages conversation that you're already having with just one other person."

To remove a contact from an iCloud group in the Contacts app on a Mac, you click on the contact and press the delete button. This should give you an option to remove the contact from the group or delete the contact. Delete contacts in Contacts on Mac.

If it is not working this way, could your contacts be saved under a different account that is not iCloud? If so, you may need to edit the contacts on their webmail. If it is an iCloud account, try editing the group from iCloud.com to see if it works.

Boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and try deleting from there.

Note:  if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode.  This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will assure a successful boot into Safe Mode.
