I get the following message on a website "Application error: a client-side exception has occurred" with macOS Catalina

If I clear “all history” the following is the warning on Mac mini, MacOS Catalina version 10.15.7:

"Clearing history will remove related cookies and other website data.  History will also be removed on other devices signed into your iCloud account."

WalMart Canada's website has been down for a long time now (at least 2 weeks) - others are affected as well. I called WalMart today, asking if they would just delete my account and then I could re-register and start from scratch again. The answer I was given was that it's a "simple problem" and just clear ALL history from your computer. Shut down for about 10 mins., then re-start and you will be able to access the WalMart website.

The message on the WalMart website currently is as follows: "Application error: a client-side exception has occurred (see the browser console for more information)." This sounds like Microsoft instructions to me. WalMart offers no explanation about it anyway.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but I don't want to do something I'll be sorry for afterwards so hopefully you can advise me. If I clear ALL history does it mean I have to make-up new passwords for the many I have now to enter different websites? That could be a huge amount of work. I'm not sure if the cookies function to retain our passwords, or not. (I'm assuming the cookies are stored elsewhere and not just in "history.")Thank you in advance for any suggestions you might have.

No, clearing the browser history does not wipe any passwords that you have created and saved for websites. Clearing the cache and history is one way to eliminate certain browser problems, and is generally benign. You won't have to spend time re-creating passwords and such.

Browser history retains certain info (usually non-critical) about which sites you have visited in the past, including some cache and user/customer info. Passwords are not retained in cookies.

You can rest assured, my friend. 🙂👍🏽

Another thing you could try is using a different browser:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

It looks like the mainline version of Firefox (118.0.2) runs on Catalina – which means that Firefox for Catalina has been updated a lot more recently than Safari for Catalina has been.

If there are Web sites that don't work quite right with Catalina's version of Safari, or that complain about it being insecure, you might find it useful to have Firefox on hand for visiting those Web sites. Whether you make it your default browser or not.
