Logging in to the App store

When I log in to the App store on my Mac desktop, I get this message at the top of my screen:

pings metrics dialogIdexception messageexception_message eventTypedialog topicxp_its_main actionUrlp3-buy.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wo/3.2.0.1.1.3.0.5.1.1.7.1 mtTopicxp_its_main failureType customerMessageexception_message m-allowed dialog m-allowed messageYour request is temporarily unable to be processed. explanationPlease try again later. defaultButtonok okButtonStringOK initialCheckboxValue

It looks like there should be more at the beginning, but that's how it reads. I haven't been able to log on to the store for a long time; either they refuse my password even after I change it, or I get a message like this one. This only happens if I try to log in to download or purchase something. Otherwise I can access the store with the app in the computer.

I really need to upgrade my OS, but don't know any other way to do it.

iMac 21.5″, OS X 10.11

MacOS isn't updated/upgraded through the App Store.

Go to System Settings>General>Software Update and any new macOS updates/upgrades available for your device should appear there.

M1 Mac mini, macOS 15.1;  Watch, series 10 GPS-only, watchOS 11.1; iPhone 16, iOS 18.1; TV 4th Gen, tvOS 18.1; HomePods, audioOS 18.1 and Airport Express w/ Airplay 2

My Mac is OS 10.11.6. It has System Preferences, not System Settings, and General only deals with appearance, scroll bars, etc. There is no Software Update there.

I have searched for updates and upgrades and it refers me only to the App Store. In the App Store there is only an update for Total Video Converter Life.

Meanwhile I am using outdated versions of Safari and Firefox, and cannot use other apps because my OS is outdated. i would really appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks, it looks like this is what I need.

My dinosaur iMac seems to only qualify for High Sierra; I wonder if it's worth the effort and agony of switching over all my software for such a small upgrade. When I bought my first Mac we were told we would always be able to use our software on a Mac. That didn't last long!

Thanks so much for your help. This seems to be just what I needed but couldn't find in my search.
