Printer works, scanner doesn't

I have an HP Inspiration 7200e printer that is connected to my Mac desktop. When I try to scan, the message I receive is that the scanner is not connected to the computer. On-line search says to update the driver. Lots of how to for PCs, but I can't find anything for Apple.

First, check that your computer indeed sees (or doesn't see) your printer & scanner. Make sure your 7200e is connected to your Mac and is turned on. I am assuming it's connected via a USB cable.

Open Apple > About This Mac > System Report > Hardware > Printers. Is your HP 7200e printer listed there?

Then, still in System Report > Hardware, click on USB. Is your HP 7200e scanner listed there?

What app are you using to scan? HP Smart App? Image Capture? Something else?

I didn't see the HP Inspiration 7200e on Apple's list of AirPrint-compatible printers.

About AirPrint - Apple Support

The Technical Specifications for the HP Envy Inspire 7200e series (same printer?) mention AirPrint.

Looks like HP wants you to download a "HP Smart for Desktop" app from the Mac App Store, and use it to set up the printer and scanner.

Though Apple claims that "If you have a multifunction AirPrint printer and scanner, you don’t need to check for software updates."
