Apple Watch Playlist Not Able to select “Play”

As can be seen in the photo the “play” option for my playlist is greyed out. The songs in the playlist are downloaded to the Apple Watch. I also have another playlist downloaded which has the same problem.

iPhone 12 Pro (17.0.3)

Apple Watch 8 (10.0.1)

Apple Watch Series 8, watchOS 10

I was able to find a solution for my problem. In order to sync the library (which includes Apple Watch) ones needs an Apple Music Subscription. After subscribing to Apple Music everything is working fine.

I was trying to add playlists that were made of songs I have purchased from iTunes. This article (Use Sync Library with your Apple Music subscription - Apple Support (CA)) states in order to use “Sync Library” you need a subscription to Apple Music

Not fully sure, but it seems iTunes Match will also allow for purchased music to be sync across Apple devices  (Subscribe to iTunes Match - Apple Support (CA).).

  1. I have the same grayed out playlists and play buttons, but I can play the songs from my watch on synced playlists (without music or match subscriptions by doing the following from the watch: Music > Library > Downloaded > Playlists > [Select Playlist] > scroll/swipe down > select any song. That song will play, as will all the other synced songs on that playlist. It’s a colossal pain, but it (currently) works.
  2. For years, I could just play these playlists from Apple Watches by tapping them (without subscribing to iTunes Match or Apple Music). Since roughly watchOS 10, I’ve the same problem you’re having. If I’d known something as simple as music syncing required ongoing payments, then I’d have bought a Garmin Watch. If this stuff like music syncing remains paywalled, I will be very tempted to change to another ecosystem for my next phone, watch, etc.
