iPhone syncing issues

I have an iPhone 13 running the current version of iOS 17 I have a power book running the latest version which is Sonoma and whenever I try and sync my iPhone it stops at step 2 preparing to sync. It will just hang there and never continue. I’ve had to force, quit and restart the computer and also restart the phone for it to be able to continue past step two is there anyway to fix this problem?

I’d been trying to figure this out for 2 days, then as soon as I post I get it working of course. Here’s what I did:

  • Connected the phone and turned off wifi sync and hit apply. Disconnected the cable
  • turned on airplane mode on the phone, made sure wifi and Bluetooth turned off
  • turned off the Apple Watch (yes, crazy, I know…but multiple people have said this worked for them)
  • restarted both the phone and the MacBook
  • plugged the cable back in and syncing worked

The only workaround I found with iOS 17.2.1 and macOS 14.2.1 is to force quit the MDCrashReportTool in Activity monitor on MacOS or Task Manager in Windows. Note that this process only runs when it's syncing.

This will allow you to sync other items like contacts, music, photos but it will not copy over log files or clear them out from your phone.

it's definitely a bug and will need to wait for Apple to fix it in a future release.

The Activity Monitor was the way to go, but for me the MDdevice manager was coming up as no response.

force quit the function. the icon (eject/sync) next to my iPad that was also on the sidebar turned to a donut icon(?).

I unplugged my iPhone, and plugged it back in, it showed up on my side bar, and then successfully synced. The Ipad icon returned to normal.

Probably will need to do this again, until the bug is fixed, but the activity monitor was a great call, never considered looking there
