The SOS mode simply indicates your iPhone is unable to find its home network (as configured by the SIM or eSIM) so it is allowed to make emergency calls only on other networks.
If you see No Service, Searching, or SOS on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
You will see from the support document linked above, there are many possible causes, ranging from a hardware problem in your phone to poor network coverage at your location. Use the support doc to guide your troubleshooting.

I have cricket wireless and mine and my boyfriend’s phone are in SOS mode since 2 AM it shut off on me right in the middle of the night and went straight to SOS and I am located in Will county Illinois which is a suburb outside of Chicago
The outage is nationwide. Cricket uses AT&T's network. There is nothing you can do until the network issues are resolved. You can try using Wi-Fi calling.
AT&T customers report a massive outage, disrupting phone service across America
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
If you have a second imei I would have your carrier try that first --generate a new esim and see if it stays connected
Make an appointment at the Genius Bar to have it diagnosed.

You contact your carrier for help.

I really thought having the new iPhone 15 Pro Max would resolve all the other issues I used to have with an android, and I have to admit I want to go back to an android because I have not had this phone since Friday and I’ve had more issues with it than I have ever had with a android phone, and when my phone carrier opens up in a few hours, I’m going to call them and I’m gonna make a complaint
Thank you so much, although my phone number is California, I live in Chicago and it doesn’t list that as a effected area but I’m sure it must be considering I was on the phone for over a hour at 9 pm last night and no issues till I woke up. I wonder if I should still go to att when they open
The news has reported that over 75 thousand have now reported the same issue and it is mostly AT&T but a few others as well, they are trying to resolve it and have not given a reason as to why it’s happening

Well I have T mobile and I have been going through this sos issues since last summer -September, I have been though 2 different sims cards from my carrier fixes it temporarily but after i while it starts to act up and I’m on the latest update and till this day still it depends on the timing sometimes it back-back 5x a day or sometimes it takes weeks to see my phone to go to sos mode I’m gonna say who is to blame because who parties are going to point fingers
at least once a day it goes into SOS mode for a extended period of time. It’s currently been in SOS mode for 5 hours (3hours into my work shift causing me to have a couple of miss calls that I needed!! Please fix!
I’m standing on an elevation with two of my carriers towers directly within line of sight, the tower behind me is literally within 1000’ and the tower in front of me is within 1500’ of my phone, every night it is the same story … directly to SOS mode. My 14 has been doing this since the update to 17.x.x. At this point I’m ready to to hit this phone with a hammer and walk away!
