Apple Music gapless playback not working in iOS 17

For several months now, going back at least to iOS 16.5, gapless playback is not working in the Music app on my iPhone. This goes for my iPhone XS this summer and now iPhone 15 Pro. I was hoping iOS 17 would fix the problem, but it remains. I mainly have my own personal (ripped from CD) mp3s synched to my phone, but it's also disappeared when streaming from Apple Music (for example, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd). This is very annoying when listening to albums designed to flow continuously (Abbey Road, various Pink Floyd albums, live albums, etc.). Gapless playback on iTunes on my PC works fine; it's the Music app on my iPhone that's the problem. I reported this to Apple a few weeks ago, but iOS 17.0.3 still has the issue. Does anyone know if Apple is working to fix this? It's getting kind of ridiculous that several iOS updates have come out in the past few months but the problem still exists. In the meantime, are there any solutions or workarounds that anyone has come across?

I found a workaround. If you check "convert to (any bitrate) AAC if higher" in the general tab on sync settings, the converted music will have gapless playback as expected.

A couple gotchas:

  • Since the conversion creates brand new files, all of your music will have to be synced again with your iPhone. This can be a pretty lengthy process depending on how large your music library is (it took me a bit over three hours to resync 62 GBs of music)
  • The highest possible bitrate you can convert to is 256 kbps, keep that in mind if the loss in quality might bother you

I do encounter serious Gapless issues, too. My biggest concern is with the Qobuz Music Streaming Service, running their iOS App (i.e. a third-party app) on my iPhone 14 Pro Max 512GB with some of the latest iOS16‘s, then 17.1 (I sat out on 17.0), and now 17.1.1.

My report is here:

https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/46611-official-qobuz-issues-thread/?do=findComment&comment=1260295

and what follows thereafter.

Let me ask: Could someone here educate me what it takes to make gapless replay possible and prevent those nerve-wrecking moments of silence?

I‘m looking for an "in principle explanation".

Like:

Gapless music replay is often touted by the software developers in their AppStore description of their music player.

  • Does such software need special programming (like reference to certain APIs, provide its own buffering?) ?

Gapless breakage is often reported in reference to certain iOS versions.

  • Does Apple have to contribute certain code in iOS to make gapless possible ?
  • Thus, is the gapless capability down to Apple only, down to outside software developers only, or to both in combination ?
  • Finally, when Gapless gets broken, who should we look at ?

Thanks!

The problem (at least mine) is that I use tracks ripped from a CD, all in the same format, same bitrate etc. And yet, iPhone cannot play them gapless. The gap is small (probably 0.2 sec) but still audible.

ITunes play gapless ok. And so does my old iPad classic. It is really the iPhone that has this problem lately. No tricks or hacks helped so far.

Thanks for the suggestion, but "Show Apple Music" is not in my Music Settings. Maybe because I'm currently an Apple Music subscriber? I seem to recall seeing that option in the past before I began subscribing. Nevertheless, the issue was occurring prior to my subscription, with mp3 albums I had ripped and synced first to my iPhone XS, then to my current iPhone 15. It's ridiculous that it's gone on for almost a year now.

Apple, please! You have to listen to all this users complain.

It can’t continue like that, its very frustrating and very disappointed knowing that this music app use to work exelent, I have an old ipad air 2 io 15.5 and comparing to 17.5.1 what a **** you have done, you ruin it at all.

someone give an advice to use the foobar2000 app and really makes me mad why you cant do what they are able to do and more than that you use to do that well. Such a huge company and you dont take care an issue for so long, let me guess you need the time to do it like it take you to do a calculator for 12 years.

My advice, make a change on the crossfade to one or two millisecond, 1 second its to much. Just like that whetter you fix it or not we will have this option
