No notification sounds in CarPlay

Hi, I’m new to iOS. Have the iPhone 15 Pro Max & using CarPlay built into my 2021 Ram 1500. No matter what settings I change, whether or not I’m in silent mode, I cannot hear any notification sounds for any type of message or alerts (phone calls do sound). I do not have any type of focus mode or driving focus turned on. I can get an alert to sound if I turn on announce messages, however then it reads the message automatically, which I don’t want. Simply, I just want it to sound an alert that a message has arrived, then I can choose whether or not to play the message out loud. Messages do come in but I don’t know unless I happen to be looking at the display, which is obviously unsafe. Also there is no vibrate or sounds that happen on the phone or my Apple Watch when connected to CarPlay, so again, no idea that a message has arrived. I sincerely hope this is a bug & not how it is designed because I’m sure that I’m not the only person that doesn’t want messages automatically read out loud. Also, don’t know if this helps, but I noticed that if I go to ringtones while connected to CarPlay, I can change & hear different sounds for ringer, but if I do the same for any other type of message, it will not sound. Appreciate any help in advance.

I have this exact same issue. It started when I changed from an Iphone12 Pro, to the Iphone 15 promax. My notification sounds for my texts and my special ringtones all used to come through the carplay/speakers of the car. I switched phones and it doesn't work

Thank you, but that doesn’t really solve what I’m saying. I do not want Messages to automatically read them out, but I do want an alert to sound when a notification comes in. So eg, I receive a text message, I just want to hear a “ding” to notice a message has come in, then allow me to tap on it to hear the message read out loud when I/if I choose. As it stands right now, the only way I hear any kind of sound is if I do have messages automatically read out loud, but again, that is not what I want.

Hey nickmiller79,

Thanks for providing us with all the information. It really helps us further isolate the issue. If you wish CarPlay to stop announcing and reading your incoming messages, check out the steps from this user guide to select your options: Announce incoming text messages with CarPlay - Apple Support

We hope this helps!

Best regards.

Agree, it’s really dumb to design it this way. I have come up with a partial solution though definitely not permanent nor complete. I set up a custom focus mode. Then I created a shortcut that is set to play a default sound if that focus mode is on (I call it “text alert.”) Then I created an automation that turns the focus on/off when I connect/disconnect from CarPlay. Then separately, I set up an automation that runs the text alert shortcut when I get a message from my wife. So when it is all running, if I’m connected to CarPlay & my wife sends me a message,I hear the alert, but when I’m not connected to CarPlay, it doesn’t play that alert (device vibrates or plays default sound according to silent mode).

annoying things are I get a shortcut notification every time my wife sends me a message (there doesn’t seem to be a way to turn that off like other notification options). Also only works for her since I can’t find a way to set it to favorites or anything like that, just can pick 1 person in the automation.

i tried using driving mode as the focus to trigger this but that turns off all notifications from all other apps so l like if work sends me something on Teams, I wouldn’t see it. And it doesn’t allow you to access the phone at all to open any other app even if you’re stopped. It really restricts what you can do on the phone while you’re in that focus mode. So that’s why I had to create a custom focus mode that is essentially my driving mode when connecting to CarPlay. Still no sound when those other notifications come in but at least if I happen to see it, I can check it if I need to but honestly all this work should not have to be done.
