Stop Apple Mail creating unwanted "Follow up..." messages in your email Inbox

Suddenly Apple decided to read through your Sent & Inbox folders of your Mail (email app) because they thought you might like to hassle your correspondents who haven't replied to you promptly. How rude ! And instrusive. You now have to manually delete these superfluous emails that no-one wrote, and you're grown-up enought to pick your own priorities and time slot.

On this forum user Cora278 brought up this issue for iOS before, but of course the thread got closed before someone had time to provide the authoritative solution to stopping the new "Follow Up.." feature. Here is a screenshot showing how to solve it for iOS 16 on iPad.

iOS/iPadOS16 introduced a number of new features - one of which was Mail Follow-up. This is an “intelligent” feature that detects, for messages that you send, that a question has been asked for which a reply is anticipated.

If you don’t wish to use this feature (that is enabled by default), it can be easily disabled in device settings:

Settings > Mail > [Messages] Follow-Up Suggestions - set to OFF
