SD card constantly ejects every 10 Seconds (2016 27" iMac, Monterey 12.7) (Oct 2023)

2016 27" iMac, Monterey 12.7

Problem: Plug the SD card (in a USB "cradle") in. The computer constantly ejects the SD card after about 10 seconds. Then it connects and ejects, every 10-20 seconds.

My Solutions were:

  • Did as recommended in an earlier answer to rename the SD card from "no name" to "no_name". This recommendation did not fix the problem for me, but I left the card renamed as "no_name" anyway.

  • Changed where I "plugged in" the SD card. I plugged the SD card (in a USB cradle) directly into he USB port in the back of the iMac. - Now the SD card ejects apprx 60 secs, long enough to copy several files.

Previously I was plugging the SD card (in a USB cradle) into the powered USB hub I have to provide easy to access to connect extra USB devices (mice, keyboard, etc). The down side is, you have to spin the entire iMac around to put the USB cradle into the USB port in the back of the machine every time you need to read an SD card. In my configuration, that is a hassle. Ejecting every 60 seconds is still a hassle, but this is were it is at.

From your description, it sounds like maybe that SD card is failing.

Test a different SD card in the iMac's slot and in the external USB card reader.
