Unable to open various office docs in sonoma 14.0

Since upgrading to Sonoma 14.0 i have discovered that i am unable to open some documents (Word & Excel). The excel issue seems to be related to documents that opened perfectly in the previous macOS, but now won't. Double clicking on the file in finder has little movement, the icon sort of 'explodes' and then disappears, then nothing (I also have an issue with Finder but will raise another conversation for that). Closing and opening the main excel is OK, but these particular files (.xlsm) will not open. It appears it is only .xlsm files in one specific dropbox folder as other .xlsm files in other folders open OK, with the regular macro warning.

I also now find i cannot open Word docs from some folders. I have a folder with minute documents in that open OK, but go to another folder and try to open a document with no success.

Both Word and Excel do not require any force quitting, however quitting and restarting the apps has no effect on opening the other files.

I stress this has only occurred since i upgraded to Sonoma 14.0 as i was trundling along all happy prior to that, with none of the issues now experienced.

Same thing happened for me. And I found a fix.

After I purchased a new M2-macbook-air and upgraded to Sonoma, (previously had an intel mac on Monterey) both Word and Excel could not open some files on OneDrive. Error message from Excel was slightly better than error message from Word and hinted that Excel could not find or did not have permissions or the file was already open. None of those were true...it's just what the error message said.

My solution:

delete the file from oneDrive. Then use oneDrive web interface to restore the file.

I just checked. I can open all docs in Word and Excel apps for Mac. I am also keeping OneDrive un-synced from the MBP. Actually, I've uninstalled it from the MBP, for it takes a lot of energy syncing uneccessarily all the time. Yesterday, I opened OneDrive in Safari and cleaned up some of my files there, deleting a few. All those that were deleted got deleted also in the Word and Excel apps in the MBP. So, it means those two apps sync with Microsoft/OneDrive when opened in the MBP.

Check your OneDrive, either in your Mac or online in Safari, to see if those files you can't open are deleted there in OneDrive.

That could very well be, but the fact remains that office-apps are not working properly anymore. Which is infuriating when you have to work with it.

Only solution is to go back to Ventura, I presume. Quite silly to offer a new operating system without verifying that people can continue their work with the most commonly used business apps out there (though I am not a fan of Microsoft either, at all)

Well, the new operating system is free. The people who use 3rd party apps do so at their own risk. Also, check with the people, who send you the docs, they may have sent you corrupted files. Ask them to send them again.

Here are my Sonoma issues:

1) With Word docs or pdfs that I get sent, not all pages show when opening them, I have never had issues before. For example I have docs with 2 pages, I can see there is content on the first page and it has content when I download it right to the Mac. However, when I open it the first page won't show itself, but the 2nd page will. Then I try downloading into google docs. When this occurs it's the exact opposite. I can see the first page but not the 2nd page. So I am sending my docs in 2 pieces from different programs as if they were separate.

2) since updating, while in my gmail, it freezes regularly all day long. I can't do anything but close it out in safari.
