This is probably a very easy problem to solve but I can't figure it out. When I try to add a clip to my time line it won't allow me, it shows a grey circle with a line through it instead of the usual green plus. I also can't add by pressing E either. Does anyone know some possible reasons for this and how I can fix them?

You need to create a project first. File->New Project, or press Command-N.

Just this one clip can't be added? Does the clip play normally in the Browser?
Select the clip in the Browser and press E to "appEnd". The expected result would be to add the clip at the end of the current timeline. What happens? Nothing? A beep?
Control-click the clip, choose Reveal in Finder, then see if it opens with Quicktime Player.
Does it play? In Quicktime Player, with the clip open, press Command-I. Post a screenshot of the Movie Inspector there.
This is from Photos, not Quicktime Player.
It shows this is an mp4 file, but does not tell us what the codec is.
Are you dragging this directly from the Photos browser in FCP?
Try exporting from Photos to your Desktop or other location in your mac, and import from there to FCP.
Does that then work to add to the timeline?
FWIW, I never use Photos with any video files, so I don't have direct experience (I do use it for photos).
I prefer to bring the videos to my mac using the Finder, and then import them to FCP.
Hi :) I had already made a project, I am trying to add the clip into it. I can add other videos in and they're all the same settings etc as that one, do you know any other explanations? And thank you for the tutorial links! I will check them out
It happened with other clips but then I gave up for a day or so and came back to them and they added fine. I've tried coming back to this one multiple times and no change. When I press E there's a beep and nothing happens.
It does play in QuickTime. Here is a screenshot of what came up with Command-I
