Not all iCloud Photos down loading to iMac

I have moved my photo library to a external SSD on my M1 iMac (16gig 512 gig drive) the drive failed after a while so I bought a new one and set up my library on this, there is 32,216 photos and 2,167 videos in my iCloud but it has only downloaded 18,523 and will not down load any more. I have a 512 gig SSD and 125 gig has been used . there is nothing else on this drive. I have unlimited gigabit fibre board band. what can I do to get them all downloaded

Hello theukdeans,

Let's use the steps below to boot your iMac into safe mode to see if that behavior still persists from there:

1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Press and hold the power button on your Mac. As you continue to hold the power button, your Mac turns on and loads startup options. When you see Options, release the power button.
3. Select your startup disk. It's named Macintosh HD, unless you changed its name.
4. Press and hold the Shift key, then click the “Continue in Safe Mode” button below your startup disk.
5. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

You can also find those steps in this resource: Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

It can take a few extra minutes to boot into safe mode. Your screen may flash or flicker while in safe mode. Those behaviors are expected. Testing in safe mode runs a check on your disk, removes some cached files, and can help isolate conflicts with startup items. Once you've tested that behavior in safe mode, you can restart to leave safe mode.

Let us know your result, and we'll keep moving forward from there.

Hi theukdeans,

Photos will sync from iCloud to your devices when you are plugged into power, and connected to the internet, via Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable.

Access and view iCloud Photos on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac - Apple Support

You do have a good amount of photos, so it may take awhile to finish. Keeping your iMac connected overnight may just do the trick.

All the best.

Hello, thank you chuckbl. for this, I have tried to follow the safe mode but pressing the shift key is not doing anything. I don't have a corded keyboard and my keyboard is at 92% in the top left of my screen when I have the choice of Macintosh HD and other, it has a keyboard saying Britsh keyboard. I have now tried 5 times to start in safe mode but it does not happen but after the restart I get an error saying "the photos app needs to quit" and 'photos must quit because the photo library is being moved, is unavailable or its data is corrupt.' and a quit button. I do not have a library anywhere but on the SSD drive. I quit it and start it and it is back to being stuck at the same spot of "downloading 18,459 originals . PAUSE but nothing downloads.
