I used to be able to take a picture using either volume button. It seems to not work anymore since I updated to iOS 17. I don’t see a setting to turn it on in my camera settings. Is this functionally gone?
It still works on my iPhone 12mini, using either "Volume down" or "Volume up" button, iOS 17.0.3

Mine isn’t working either. Works in camera app but not Snapchat

iOS 17.4 -- I am unable to do so on Whatsapp.
But works on native camera app.
Any suggestions?
Totally agree with you - They're both nonsense!
Whatsapp support is non-existent.
I get standard bot responses saying - NO support for media related queries. Even emails are not monitored blah & blah! Ridiculous!

Facebook/Meta's apps, in the last six months or so, have become nothing more than bug-ridden excuses for programming. It's kind of sad.
No amount of restarting will make it work again! Something nobody is able to respond to/own up to.
Whatsapp support is now non-existent
iOS folks say nothing to do with them.

I was able to use the volume button on the side to take a picture or video on my old iPhone XR. Same with my new iPad.. Got a new iPhone 15 and it doesn’t let me do that anymore I have to use the button on the screen to take a picture. Any solution to this?

Talk to SnapChat. It seems to be an issue with their software.
