I bought an iPad so that I could have an entree into the Apple/ios environment. Everything else for me is Windows, Chrome, Google and Android. But WhatsApp is a key part of my work. I can’t find an app for WhatsApp on iOS - is it not usable on iPad?

This is extraordinary. Most of my communicants use Whatsapp. I haven't asked them if they use ipad, but I think some/lots of them use iphone. Does iphone support whatsapp? Certainly my android tablet has whatsapp. Being peremptorily told by apple forums to 'google whatsapp' diminishes my confidence in ios. This is the first ios device I've had. I'm getting the vibe that I'm too stupid to use ipad.
SMS uses the cellular voice channel. iPads, even cellular models, do not support the cellular voice channel, only cellular data. So it is impossible for an iPad to support SMS.
Meta, if they chose to, could support WhatsApp on iPads, the same way way do on computers.
No, it is 100% because Meta either doesn’t want to provide it for iPad, or they are working on it and haven’t released it yet.
But keep in mind that you must have it on an iPhone before you can add it to other devices.

Whilst the App is not available for iPad - you should be able to access the service using a web browser:

There is a desktop WhatsApp app for Mac. I use it every day. Just not for the iPad.
I don’t think that this is a satisfying or even smart answer, relating the iPad’s ability to have a Whatsapp connnected to an SMS or call issue. Other devices not having SMS such as Mac, Macbook, and other android tabs, do have Whatsapp available. Once Apple opens this Whatsapp on iPad, I believe more users would move to Apple ecosystem.

If you have an iPhone, you can also use your iPad to send iMessages/SMS messages to your daughter.

The bottom line is that WhatsApp doesn't support iPads. Take anything further up with them.
Yes it does make sense - because that number is not a regular phone number and cannot be used as one. It is for the provider to keep track of it. An iPad is NOT a phone.

You'll need to take this up with WhatsApp. Apple has no control over what devices Whatsapp does or does not support.
Just purchased a second hand iPad Pro for study purposes but still have my old galaxy pad, thought it will be a good idea to get used to apple products, but a lot of apps are missing. Mainly WhatsApp which is my main app for conversations and web version is sluggish and is not able to take calls also. Regretting the decision.

It's entirely up to WhatsApp to decide what devices they support. It is up to you to do your research before buying.
