I bought an iPad so that I could have an entree into the Apple/ios environment. Everything else for me is Windows, Chrome, Google and Android. But WhatsApp is a key part of my work. I can’t find an app for WhatsApp on iOS - is it not usable on iPad?

The WhatApp developers have not released an App compatible with iPad - the App being currently limited to iPhone.
Whilst the App is not available for iPad - you should be able to access the service using a web browser:

There is a WhatsApp for mac. Native app. Search on App Store for mac.

I hope the Apple developers would actually look into adding WhatsApp for iPad especially sometimes when you forget to bring your phone along with you like on a vacation

All iPad models are available in two versions - these being WiFi Only (without Cellular hardware/capabilities) or WiFi+Cellular that does include Cellular (and will therefore have a SIM slot).
