Desk top shows two back up ext hard drives both same title

One has backups and other is empty. Disk utilities Only show the drive with backups. Can't eject the empty one, can't force eject either.

I am using ios 13.2.

iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 13.2

My wife and many of my clients will unplug their Time Machine external drive when it is connected to their laptop and just walk away. Inevitably they get the dreaded (or not so dreaded "Disk not ejected properly" message. I recommend to everyone (and also follow the practice) of ejecting my external disks before unplugging my MBP. In addition I check to ensure there that if there is a current TM backup running I either let it finish or cancel it. I am confident the wife and my clients don't do this. So my first question is how likely will doing this corrupt a TM backup? Sure the answer is who knows. I get paranoid and if this happens to me I try to erase the TM backup and create a fresh one. [As far as I know, there is no way to check the integrity of TM backups, right?]. Is there some menu bar item / application that will eject your disks, making it safe to disconnect, BUT before doing so it will detect if a Time Machine backup is running or not, and warn you. It could tell you "Time Machine is backing up to the External Drive <External Drive> It is x percent done. Cancel Eject Ignore " or something along those lines. I would use this, and I would make my wife use it, and recommend it to my clients. I am using "Mountain" to eject volumes, but it doesn't seem to have this feature. Might suggest it to them. Bryan

Can't remove a drive from "Excluded from Back Up" list in Time Machine - reopened with solution Original post was in 2020 by another member of the community. It was closed for updates. External drive in "Exclude from Backups" is greyed out so cannot be removed from exclusion list. In other words, Time Machine doesn't back it up. To fix in my case, renamed the drive from Video to VideoMine. Though how it then backed up 3 TB in under a minute, I don't understand. An ASUS/Intel VROC with 4 Samsung Pro SSDs can run almost that fast but not a single EVO drive connected to USB and certainly not write that fast to a hard drive. Must be magic. And yes, all the files are on the Time Machine backup. Perhaps some expert out there can explain what was going on regarding the speed of the backup. My guess: the exclude was ignored and the drive was actually being backed up all along. Hardware: 4TB Samsung EVO SSD in OWC USB-C external enclosure USB-C connection to CalDigit 4 12TB Western Digital external drive for Time Machine also connected to CalDigit 4 CalDigit 4 USB-C connected to 2023 MacBook Pro CalDigit also powering the MacBook through USB-C

Start with this if IntelMac...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
