iCloud Drive uploads and downloads to Mac extremely slow

Hello.

For the last week, iCloud Drive has been uploading and downloading files to my Mac in an extremely slow manner; in fact, up- and download have come to a halt. Does anyone have this problem?

I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch, M1, 2020, 16 GB RAM, with macOS Sonoma 14.0

Hey Autolykos,

Boot into safe mode to see if it happens there. Safe mode may help determine whether the issue is with software that starts as the Mac boots up.

This article explains how to boot into safe mode, along with next steps depending on the outcome: Use safe mode on your Mac. Afterwards, you can restart the Mac normally.

If issue continues, we recommend reaching out to Apple Support here: Use safe mode on your Mac.

Take care.

Hello Autolykos,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that your Mac is running slower than expected. We are happy to help.

Please try the steps here: If your Mac runs slowly - Apple Support

"If you find your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.

  • Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk or an external storage device, then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk. macOS can also help you optimize storage by storing files in the cloud and helping you identify files you no longer need. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down). Click Storage on the right, then click the storage recommendations you want to use.
  • An app you’re using may require more memory than your Mac has easily available. You can use Activity Monitor to see how much memory your Mac and apps are using. See View memory usage in Activity Monitor. Also see the documentation that came with the app to find out its system requirements.
  • Quit any app that isn’t compatible with your Mac. For example, an app may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the app for information about its system requirements.
    • To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General  in the sidebar, then click About on the right.
    • To see which graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click General  in the sidebar. Click About on the right, then click System Report. Click Graphics/Displays to see the name of the graphics card installed your computer.
  • Quit any apps you’re not using.
  • If you have problems with your disk, use Disk Utility to verify and try and fix any issues."

These steps may help. Please let us know if you have further questions.

Take care.

Hello Green500,

Thank you for your answer. I have removed all but one unsigned apps, storage on my startup disk is fine. Now my machine runs relatively smoothly, although iCloud sync, especially uploading, is still very slow.

I have a system extension that has stuck in after removing the application it belonged to, which míy be the main culprit for my Mac slowing down:

[Running] AdGuard Network Extension - version 2.5.2 (Adguard Software Limited)

    Application: /Applications/Adguard.app - version 2.5.2 (Not found!)

    Description: AdGuard Network Extension

I tried to uninstall it with systemextensionsctl, following these instructions: https://derflounder.wordpress.com/2020/09/01/uninstalling-macos-system-extensions/. However, it did not work - maybe because it was written in 2020, generations before Sonoma? To uninstall the system extension using systemextensionsctl the first step is to locate the Team and the bundle identifiers for the extension. I followed the instructions for locating the bundle and team identifiers but I stuck here - maybe because the application whose part this extension was had already been removed?

Thanks again.
