Sonoma: Macbook Pro (M1 2020) Touch Bar display not working after update

I updated to Sonoma from Ventura. And after the install, I noticed that the Touch Bar display didn't come on. also the Mac screen would freeze for a upto 15 seconds if I shut and opened the lid. the mouse pointer would move but would not allow me to open or close or click anything on the screen.

I asked Mac support to help and they made me do everything possible from diagnostics which showed everything was fine to reinstall, downgraded and wipe out the memory and reinstall Ventura. Nothing helped get the Touch Bar display functional.

The funny thing is that the Touch Bar is responsive but its dimply is off.

Been to a Genius Bar as well and they couldn't explain why this happened, they even tried to tell me it may be an underlining problem that got surfaced due to the update. How is that possible for an issue to surface on the updated os and then it does not show an error or even show a diagnostic issue.

They wanted me to pay for changing the keyboard which is considerable cost. That's criminal.... to ask me to pay for replacement of parts due to a software update especially if they are unable to explain the actual cause.

Anyone else having similar issues and have found a work around or solution?

I have your exactly same issues in my MacBook Pro 13” M1 since I updated to Sonoma. No one seems to be able to solve the problem, the Apple Service said it is necessary to replace the “logic board” for more than the half of the original price of the laptop…unbelievable! We hope Apple could find a solution, otherwise I will feel extremely disappointed with this brand and I won’t buy any new product from they! APPLE MUST SOLVE THESE PROBLEMS STRAIGHT AWAY!

No that doesn't help. The Touch Bar is beyond f*cked because Apple is a terrible product now. For me I just have to deal with the problem or restart the computer (AKA restart the the startup disk) a hundred times and "restart" the SMC. Nothing is a solid fix apart from throwing the computer against a wall and never using Apple's products again and spread the good word that apple is sh*t.

My Touchbar also disappeared after upgrade.

My device is a MacBook Pro 2018 15-inch with Intel i7 processor.

Is Apple messing up with devices purposely via software?

Both the Touch Bar services in Activity Monitor (TouchBarServer and Control Strip) don't show, nor the TouchBar Preference Settings button appear in the Keyboard setup menu, as if the TouchBar was never there.

Not only this model has the keyboard design and execution issue "press once, get two" characters, that not even a warranty replacement fixed it, now I am losing my Touch Bar...

I think Apple wants me to not trust Apple anymore, and they are being successful at it.

If it is a hardware issue no amount of software fixes will resolve the problem...

After several attempts to request for a viable solution with Apple customer care. Their final answer was to change the entire keyboard and touch - panel which was a ridiculous cost.

I found a great third party who said the touch bar was malfunctioning physically and could be replaced at 1/3 the cost of what Apple customer care was asking for.

I am happy to report my device is now working fine without any issues. They didn’t replace the entire panel, just the Touch Bar

I was curious to understand why the problem had happened in the first place.

Their only explanation is that there is a circuit connecting each changeable part in the laptop that usually gets activated during updates to configure the part and may not actually be in use during day to day use. If that part has a small defect or gets rust or dirt it may damage the circuit during the update. But this is just an assumption, only Apple can give us an answer. But the Touch Bar is a failure with Apple and many users have similar issues, which Apple keeps brushing off especially if out of warranty period. If in warranty or Apple care they just replace the entire part or unit “no repairs”, so no one is the wiser of the cost- not even the service Center employee know! Apple should just recall all touchbar devices and replace with a non touchbar one.

if you are out of warranty or don’t have apple care don’t waste your time and energy with Apple service Center- THEY WILL NOT HELP!

it’s painful and frustrating but only way out is a third party engineer who know what they are doing - it will still be expensive for genuine parts ( I got a life time warranty or the replaced touchbar- better than anything that Apple offer in Apple care) but that the only solution.

best of luck guys.

I finally solved the problem: it has been necessary to replace the Touch Bar and to have the motherboard repaired. In Italy the assistance was really bad, in particularly in the Marche Region. They said to me the only thing possible was to replace the motherboard for more than the half price of the original purchase price of the laptop. Then, when I went to China, I had an excellent official service, they solved the problem in only one day, even giving me a spare laptop.

This issue can only be solved by replacing the Touch Bar. The Sonoma upgrade has caused an hardware problem.
