Some photo editors provide one or more photo editing extensions. The photo editing extensions can be used directly in Photos in Edit mode. When you open a photo in Edit mode, you will be seeing a button with three dots in the toolbar, and from there you can call the photo editing extensions. it makes it easy to use specific tools from the external editors and we do not have to load the full application. For example, Affinity photos is installing five different extensions.

I am using mostly Luminar Neo to develop and touch up my photos, but occasionally I am calling one of the Affinity extensions or Graphic Converter or Photo Revive.

If a Photo editing extension is provided I prefer it to calling the full app, because we do not have to say the edited photo. It will appear in Photos automatically, when we close the extension.

There are no Plugins. You can edit the photo with any photo editor in your Applications folder by Control (right) - clicking on the thumbnail, select Edit with and then the editor you prefer from the options that come up:

All apps that can open the image file will be shown. Pick the one you prefer.

NOTE: when editing a photo with an external editor the resulting edited file MUST be saved with the same extension as the original file. If not Photos will not know it's been edited and it will be lost somewhere inside the Photos library. Example: If you add layers using Photoshop Elements to .jpg file it will want to save the resulting file as a .psd file. You must flatten the image and save it a .jpg file.

Leonie I think that you have answered my question. Things have changed since my last OS (High Sierra!) so I was asking about plug-ins which are now apparently passe!! But, when I open Luminar as directed by Old Toad, the edited photo stays in Luminar. Or am I missing a step? So if I do it your way, it will pop back into Photos after I'm finished editing?

Thanks for always answering questions so kindly.
