I have followed instructions from previous posts by others for finding the Contacts file within Gmail. This was to go to Settings/Mail/Accounts and turn on Contacts. Then look for Groups in upper left corner.
This does not work. There is no Groups or any other icon or letters/words in upper left.
have I missed something?

Open the app Contacts on your iPad and tap tap the icon in the upper left to display the lists of contacts.
The Contacts app is now in the App Library. On your iPad, swipe left until you reach the last screen, locate the Contacts app and slide it toward one of your Home Screens.
The lists in the Contacts app and the Gmail app are independent. If you need the same list in the Gmail app, you'll have to create it there.
In Contacts, tap the icon in the upper left to display the lists of contacts. Then select a list.
I’ve done that and manually added a list called TCMG. It has 19 email addresses in it and is a list under Gmail. However, when I go to the Gmail app and type TCMG in the address bar it does not appear. Do I have to take another step to make the link work?
“Contacts” does not appear anywhere that I can find it. Where should it be?
The Contacts app is in the App Store and says Open. How do I change that to Get so I can put it on my desktop on the iPad? Then perhaps I can work on it.
