iPhone 14 screen glitches while charging with case

I have two iPhone 14 pro’s. Both behave identically. When the phone is in a case and plugged into an Apple usb c charger, the touch screen control is highly erratic. The bottom becomes pretty much unresponsive and other areas are unpredictable. Unplug power - no more problem. Remove case and plug in - no problem. I’ve tried 3 different brands made of different materials - first ones were semitransparent flexible material, one was a soft sided rigid plastic and the last was a silicone case with thousands of positive reviews on Amazon. It’s been suggested this is the case/case manufacturer’s problem - a simple silicone case should not be an active smartphone component. The disruption does not begin immediately when plugged in - it begins as soon as the phone recognizes that it’s charging and the charge indicator turns green.

I can now confirm this is a wallpaper related bug. The photo slideshow wallpaper and weather at the very least will trigger it. A static image wallpaper does not appear to have the problem.

Hi Scofulle,

As you have successfully isolated the behavior to only occur while the cases are installed, the case manufacturer may be able to provide additional information or direction regarding the behavior you're experiencing. As this does not happen when the cases are not in place and charging you may wish to verify that the charging cable is not being impeded in any way when connected, as the most likely scenario based on what you describe would be the cable may not be fully inserting into the phone or the case may be making contact with the charger and affecting the connection.

Regards.

Ok - some fair disclosure here. I manage over 150 iOS devices. I have owned and operated a managed service provider for over 25 years, and prior to that I managed the largest consumer electronics repair center in Kansas.

I’ve worked on every Apple product since the Apple II.

I’ve diagnosed the conditions with multiple devices with multiple accessories. A silicone case is NOT an active device.

I have additionally tested from plugging and unplugging from the source end of the cord as well - problem persists. This indicates the cord is NOT a problem and software has an event on plugin that is involved

Additionally this problem appears to be rampant: Touch screen issues while charging - Apple Community

I’d bet most of these people complaining about screen issues on plugin have cases on their phones as well (many in that thread have Apple brand cases).

The general response has been to blame the charger and or cable.

These are not the problems. You have a software problem.

Yes - it does it with any of our Apple chargers in the house and when I plug it into my car’s usb port for the stereo. Initially I thought the edges of the case were contacting the edges of the screen - but then found it was only when charging. Since I have found if I put something inbetween the case and the phone to prevent it from full inserting into the case it still has the same behavior - so it in no way a contact with the screen issue. It appears to be a sensor is triggering it from the top rear of the phone - perhaps in the area of the camera. It does this with two identical phones and 3 cases - one of which being a very mainstream silicone case. I suppose I can gamble another $60 on an Apple case, but I’d really like to know what’s happening when plugging the thing in that tells the phone to change its touchscreen behavior - because that’s clearly what’s happening regardless of case brand and perhaps could be caused by other outside factors or interference. I know others have had the issue and been shut down on “it’s the case” - but the phone is clearly doing something active.
