Apple Music on Watch Ultra only plays on iPhone not Bluetooth Connected Earbuds

Usually my watch works perfectly to connect to my earphones via bluetooth. Not today. All music is playing via AirPlay over wifi to my iPhone, not via bluetooth to my paired earphones. All devices are updated to latest iOS and WatchOS. I have powered off and reset my watch.

When I select Airplay on the watch, it shows a connection to my iPhone and offers to pair via airplay to other speakers and televisions on my home wifi network. I have tried Settings, Music, Control Panel and every other features I can think of on the watch. The headphones are connected to the watch. I can also connect them to the iPhone and hear music, but I want to leave the phone behind for a workout.

None of the solutions I have found so far are working for this problem. What's next?

I guess I fixed this. I took the watch and headphones 100 yards away from the iPhone. The Music app on the watch then switched over and played on the headphones. When I returned, I was relieved that music had not been playing on the iPhone in my absence. Now the watch and Music app are working normally on all of my Bluetooth headphones. I wonder why powering the devices on and off did not reset the connection, but the distance did.
