no disk shown when re-installing macOS after erasing computer

I'm trying to reinstall my macOS after erasing my computer, but there is no disk listed to choose from. Nothing I'm doing is helping.


iMac 27″, macOS 14.0

Start by reviewing this passage from How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support:


  • If the installer doesn't see your disk, or it says that it can't install on your computer or volume, you might need to erase your disk first.


In that link (erase your disk) read If you don’t see Macintosh HD in Disk Utility. Disk Utility's View menu will have an option, Show All Devices. Be sure to select that. The device you need to erase will be the upper left most internal device in the list. It should have an immutable name such as "APPLE SSD <...>" Select that device and erase it.

Hi Vball_Mom,


It looks like you're trying to install macOS Catalina when you were previously using macOS Big Sur or newer. The Update volume was part of the previous installation.


To resolve your issue, erase the APFS container that held the previous macOS installation. This deletes all volumes (including hidden ones) from that container and creates a fresh volume to use. Normally the process would be simpler, but it appears that your Mac has a Fusion Drive - spanning the container across two drives (a small SSD and a large hard drive).


To erase the APFS container in your case, reset your Fusion Drive and reinstall macOS. This erases all data on your Mac. Follow the steps for macOS Mojave or later.

Regarding the Apple disk image and the macOS Base System, that's the macOS Recovery image that you're running from. For safety, Disk Utility won't let you erase either of them.

What steps have you already taken?

How did you erase your Mac?


Start by booting your Mac in Recovery mode and use Disk Utility to format the internal disk drive device.

In Disk Utility, you'll need to click View > Show All Devices so that you can select the top most internal device. Format that device with the APFS format and the GUID partition scheme. Give the drive the name "Macintosh HD".


With the drive now reformatted, quit Disk Utility and launch the Reinstall macOS app from the macOS Utilities screen. You should now be able to select the newly reformatted drive and reinstall macOS onto the device so that it becomes the startup drive.

Select the volume "Update" and click the Volume – button to delete that.


Now select Fusion Drive and click First Aid to repair any issues that DU might identify.


Finally, select Fusion Drive and click Erase. You should be able to give a Name: (Macintosh HD), select a Format: (APFS) and Scheme: (GUID Partition Map) and erase the drive.


Now, If you quit Disk Utility and return to the macOS Utilities recovery screen, you can select reinstall macOS and proceed with that.

I went into Disk Utility, erased Macintosh HD, APFS, “erase volume group” as described in instructions o found. Then tried to Reinstall MacOS and this is where I am now, with no options on the list in which to place the OS.

When I go to Disk Utility now, and select “show all devices,” I have in the upper left “Fusion Drive” with sub files of “Container disk3” and another sub file of “Update.”

Below that, there is another main file called “Apple Disk Image” with an eject icon option next to it. That file has a sub file called “macOS Base System.”


I’m hesitant to delete any of these two main files. Not sure where to turn. Thank you.
