The reason why there's no disk drives when preparing to install macOS is because you deleted all of your disk drives instead of erasing it. I also did the same as you, since about two years ago, but I know how to fix this because I watched a YouTube video about it. Here's an easy step-by-step solution:

  1. Restart your Mac. Click the Apple logo on the top left, then click Restart.
  2. Boot into recovery. After the screen turns black, press Cmd+R on your keyboard until you see a spinning globe on the screen. Click "Choose Network..." then choose your Wi-Fi network. Enter the Wi-Fi network's password, then the Mac will start Internet Recovery. This might take a few minutes.
  3. Check if there's a disk drive. When the macOS Utilities window pops up, go to Disk Utility and it should make a new disk drive. Changing the name of your disk drive is optional. You can leave the disk drive as is, or rename it.
  4. Reinstall macOS. Quit Disk Utility, then click Reinstall macOS, then follow the onscreen instructions.
  5. (Optional) Install macOS Sierra. If you're on a operating system other than Sierra, continue setting up your Mac, then go to Safari and search for macOS Sierra. Click the first search result, then follow the onscreen instructions.

I also have the same problem when installing Mac OS X Lion on my 2007 Mac mini. Luckily, I know how to fix this problem.

  • Check your Wi-Fi connection. If you're not connected to Wi-Fi, tap the Wi-Fi icon, choose your network, then enter the network's password.
  • Set the date and time. Click Utilities in the menu bar, then Click Terminal. Enter the following command: sudo ntpdate -u time.apple.com
  • Check Apple servers. Click Get Help Online, then copy the link: https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus Make sure all servers are marked green.
