Unable to check for updates to Apple Watch software

My Apple Watch requires a software update but when I try to check for updates using the Watch app on my iPhone or on the watch itself I just get an error message saying: An error occurred while checking for a software update.

I've tried restarting both devices and made sure there is plenty of storage space on both. I'm running iOS 17 on my iPhone 12. The watch series 6 or 7 I think.

Can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks!
