I've wound up with 5 discs visible on my desktop with the same name, differentiated by a number at the end of each name, and they are all parts of the same physical volume. How do I re-assemble them into one desktop volume? I know it can be done, but I've forgotten how.

Hello, Leroydouglas, yes, it's the same old issue but worse, and I managed to fix it this morning by digging up that original exchange and following the suggestions. In brief: Use disk utility to select each container disk, erase it, then do the same with any disks left over. Because I used "erase", as you suggested then, rather than "partition", Gradually 5 were reduced to 2, then 1, which is the outcome I hoped for. Thank you for the help then, and for your willingness to help out again.

How is this drive formatted?
Are these separate partitions, containers, or volumes..
What do you see here from the Terminal.app
diskutil list external
Combining 4-5 desktop discs into one contiguous disc
