Macbook Air 2017 - IOS Upgrade Compatibility

I have a 2017 Macboook Air with 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, and 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 of memory. What is the most current IOS I can upgrade to with this system? I have generally avoided IOS updates, as I've run into losing access to certain applications when upgrading. Could I update to MacOS12 (Monterey) or further?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.13

Hi there!

You can upgrade to macOS Monterey 12. Using this Apple Support article, How to download and install macOS - Apple Support, choose to download Monterey 12 using the App Store.

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac. If you have an external storage device, you can use it to back up your Mac with Time Machine.

Hope this helps!

upgrade?

There is no such thing as a MacBook Air Pro. It's one or the other (or sometimes, neither).

According to MacTracker,

  • A 2017 MacBook Air can upgrade as far as macOS Monterey, but no further.
  • Any of the 2017 MacBook Pros can upgrade as far as macOS Ventura, but no further.
  • The 12" 2017 Retina MacBook (no suffix) can also upgrade as far as macOS Ventura, but no further.

There is no such thing as a MacBook Air 2007. Apple released the original MacBook Air in January 2008. For it, Mac OS X 10.7.* (Lion) is the end of the line. Lion is ten major versions behind the version of macOS you want – and is so old that the version of Safari included with it is unable to connect to many https Web sites.

Apple released 13" MacBooks with white plastic cases in Mid 2007 and Late 2007. For them, Lion is also the end of the line. There were 15" and 17" Mid/Late MacBook Pros that fared a little better. You could upgrade them all the way to El Capitan. El Capitan is extremely outdated, and is six major versions behind the version you want to run – Monterey. Apple released the last update to El Capitan (10.11.6) in July 2016, and even Mozilla abandoned that operating system as of sometime in 2021. (No Firefox ESR feature updates or security patches, for El Capitan, since then.)

Monterey itself is set to fall out of "the most recent three" in just a few months, when Sequoia comes out. If you are thinking of replacing that ancient Mac with a new, or newer, one, I suggest buying one that is on the Sequoia compatibility list. (Even if you just run Monterey or Ventura on it to start.)

If you typed the year wrong and are not referring to one of these 2007 MacBook or MacBook Pro models, please clarify.
