I want to creat a video in I Movie for my sister in laws birthday. The family has sent great pictures but they are all in Google Photos. Google doesn’t have a good slide show application. How can I get the pictures from Google to Apple?

Download to the Mac and upload to the iPhone. If you have edited metadata inside Google Photos, use Google takeout to import also that data in .json sidecars and use GraphicConverter or exiftool on the Mac to join it to the originals.
I had not previously downloaded directly to the iPhone but I now briefly tested it. It is also possible to download directly to the iPhone but it seems to strip almost all metadata like GPS no matter what so I'd not use that route.
Google Photos has the download button.
Notice that Google Photos has "Original quality" and "Storage saver" settings. The latter converts downloaded movies to VP9 codec which is incompatible with QuickTime Player. So use the "Original quality" setting instead.
